When a friend of mine introduced me to golf many years ago, I wasn't overly impressed and asked him what he saw in the game. He said, "Well, golf means different things to different people. To me, it's mostly about being away from my busy life for a few hours, being one with nature, and talking to some good friends." That made sense to me, but I quickly found out what he meant as I became a golfer, too, taking lessons and burying myself in golf equipment reviews.

People do take up golf for different reasons and it does mean something different to almost every player. For some, like my friend, it's relaxing on a beautiful course and enjoying nature and the scenery. To others it's a great way to meet with clients and close deals. Some just enjoy an occasional round. Others get hooked and pursue mastery of the game with single-minded passion. But no matter what attracts you to the game of golf, we all have something in common: we need equipment. Lots of it.

Initially I had a real problem with that. Golf shops intimidated me. I didn't really know much about golf clubs, golf shoes or even golf bags and I was embarrassed about my lack of knowledge. Whenever I went to a pro shop, everyone else seemed to be an expert, knowing everything about golf, except me. I didn't understand half of what sales people were talking about and I didn't even understand many of their questions. So I felt they were talking down to me and I resented that.

So I began reading golf books and magazines and asked golfing buddies for advice. I ended up with a good set of clubs, found that some balls worked better for me than others (I am a Titleist man), and spent a small fortune on golf equipment (Nike made a small fortune off me) I did or did not need. Truth be told, my lack of knowledge and my being ill at ease with the sales people in the pro shops probably kept me from enjoying the game as much as I should have.

All of this changed in the past few years. I am an online person. To me, finding accurate and unbiased golf equipment reviews on the web was just what I had been waiting for. I am not talking about just online golf stores or golf bulletin boards. What helped me were sites done by golfing enthusiasts who simply wanted to share their knowledge with others. See, while I used to be aware of the likes of Burton or Ogio or Ping, there wasn't anyone who told me who truly made the best bag for me. I was told some of the training aids out there really worked while others were a waste of money but I didn't know which was which. I knew of amazing advancements in golf carts and I had even heard of new technologies like golf gps, but I didn't know what was valuable information and what was just marketing.

For me, the emergence of golf enthusiast sites with golf equipment reviews made all the difference. I love reading reviews written by real people as opposed to just sales spiels, and I love how some of those sites explain it all in terms that make sense. I love to read and learn, and these days I totally rely on golf sites that are not only entertaining, but also provide me with the reviews I need and even recommendations on where to get the best deals.

When talking about 'vehicle tracking,' we immediately think of car chases, carjackers, cops and robbers. What we don't know in fact is that this method is used in other industries such as in business and security industries.

The shipping industry is the pioneer industry when it comes to utilizing a commercial vehicle tracking system. Simply put, commercial vehicle tracking is the act or process of tracking down the location of a certain vehicle for commercial or business purposes, and the shipping industry was the first to exploit this technology when they needed a way to monitor the location of large fleets of vehicles. Through the implementation of such a system, shipping corporations were able to pinpoint the exact locations of shipment drop-offs and among other things.

This industry has now expanded through the years. There are now smaller-scale industries related to commercial vehicle tracking devices. Today, various corporations use this system as this is both time and cost-efficient.

An example of this modern-day commercial vehicle tracking application is the dispatching of freight vans and other delivery vehicles. This is done by installing a transmitter on a particular freight van. Through this, an operator can accurately check the activity of the freight van as it makes its delivery within the area. All stops, detours, drop-offs are displayed on the computer monitor or in another remote hardware device.

Some companies even offer other features packaged with their tracking services. Some examples are printable reports (speed reports, idling reports, Journey reports,), detailed location mapping, route finding, among others.

Companies involved in commercial vehicle tracking services also offers other services and packages such as printable reports like speed reports, idling reports, and journey reports, detailed location mapping, route finding among others. Field sales and trailer tracking are other commercial uses of vehicle tracking. For instance, in field sales, vehicle tracking is used to retrieve driving directions and planning last-minute itineraries.

Because these are such unsettling times, to say the least, people have looked for ways to safeguard their possessions and themselves too. It used to be good enough to have a car alarm and a home security system in place. Ah, the good old days! Now security has been taken to a whole new high tech level. There are gadgets that would seem to come right out of a James Bond movie. Gadgets that are now accessible to you and I. These are things that are geared to protect us given the current day circumstances and social climate. We should all be glad that technology has been utilized to provide us with such an array of safety products, for just in case.

Let us explore some of these very useful gismos. Say you`re a parent of a young child and you both are in a crowded mall or on a busy street. You get distracted for just a second or two and your energetic child wanders off. This certainly would be cause to panic. How would you know where your kid went or what might happen to them?

Enter a child guard monitoring system. This small device is comprised of microchips and a transmitter that can be placed in your child`s pocket, inside a toy, or even worn around their neck. You the parent carry the receiver that emits a signal which gets louder and louder as you get closer to your child. panic attack over.

There are also so many high tech surveillance systems that come equipped with infrared night vision, motion, and smoke detectors allowing you to monitor everything that goes on outside your home. These devices are all weather proof too, easily installed, and provide high resolution images.

One of my favorites is the mini GPS tracking system. This device comes in handy if you`re a parent and you want to know where your teenager is or has been and if they have been speeding. Have a spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend that you think might have a lover on the side? Then you might also want to get your hands on this gismo which has an internal computer that tracks and records data every second. It can tell you where the driver went, if they stopped anywhere, and for how long. You simply stash this small tracking device in glove compartment, under the seat, or even under the car, and it is ready to go.

Say for some reason (and no one needs to know why) you want to call someone but you don`t want your voice to be recognized. There are cell phones that can alter your voice to be completely unrecognizable. It can change a young man`s voice to an old man`s voice, a woman can sound like a man, and visa versa. Pretty cool stuff! There`s also a calling card that will change what someone sees in their caller ID and it can even record the conversation.

For inside your home there are safes and hiding places for your valuables. These safes obscure your belongings into what looks like ordinary household products. I`m not able to tell you exactly what those are for obvious reasons, but suffice it to say that a would-be burglar would not be able to get the goodies that are hidden in plain sight. Concerned about your nanny or care giver for your elderly parent? There are digital cameras disguised as clock radios, calculators, air purifiers, books sets, and even ones that look like plants!

What if you are going somewhere and there is a cause for you to video something? Again, no one needs to know why. There are amazing high resolution cameras that also provide sound. Of course these are disguised as well. They might look like a watch, a tie, a pen, sunglasses, or a pocket book to name a few. Your clothes could in effect serve as a whole recording studio.

All of the personal safety gismos, from the disguised pepper sprays that look like cell phones, or pens, or even lipsticks, and those that emit ear piercing shrieking sounds and alarms are all geared to give you time to run for safety. Let`s face it, it is all about keeping us and our loved ones safe at home or on the street. If we all lived in a peaceful crime-free society, none of these products would have been developed. Since that is not the case, thank goodness that these products were designed to proactively safeguard our lives. For a fascinating in depth look at the array of clever safety products, check out the site in the bio box.

Covert Vehicle Tracking Devices

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

A covert tracking device is a hidden electronic component that uses a transmitter and a receiver. In GPS covert tracking and communications technology, a covert vehicle surveillance unit is an extremely small size and versatile location device that allows you to track vehicles or other high value mobile assets in real time. The covert vehicle tracking device is generally attached underneath a vehicle using the high power light weight magnets. Here it picks up reflected GPS signals and reports position information back to your PC using SMS messages. The transmitter sends a signal and the recivers captures that signal if they are set on the same frequency.

For example, MiniTRAK PRO (TM) GPS Datalogger can map exactly where it has been by recording its own time, date, location, speed direction and altitude at preset levels. [ ]

How it works :

1. The Locator requires a SIM card - to enable you to send instructions and receive positions from the tracking device

2. The GPS antenna attached to the device allows it to know where it is using the latitude / longitude format. The GSM modem within the device then sends this information, like a regular text message, to the monitoring service or web-based tracking software.

3. You then access the tracking service to view current positions or a history trail of where the device has been.

Covert Vehicle Tracking Devices can be used for a variety of purposes:

a) Fleet control : For example, a delivery or taxi company may put such a tracker in every of its vehicles, thus allowing the staff to know if a vehicle is on time or late, or is doing its assigned route. The same applies for armored trucks transporting valuable goods, as it allows to pinpoint the exact site of a possible robbery.

b) Stolen vehicle searching : Owners of expensive cars can put a tracker in it, and "activate" them in case of theft. "Activate" means that a command is issued to the tracker, via SMS or otherwise, and it will start acting as a fleet control device, allowing the user to know where the thieves are.

c) Animal control : When put on a wildlife animal (e.g. in a collar), it allows scientists to study its activities and migration patterns. Animal tracking collars may also be put on domestic animals, to locate them in case they get lost.

d) Race control : In some sports, such as gliding, participants are required to have a tracker with them. This allows, among other applications, for race officials to know if the participants are cheating, taking unexpected shortcuts or how far apart they are.

e) Espionage/surveillance : When put on a person, or on his personal vehicle, it allows the person monitoring the tracking to know his/her habits. This application is used by private investigators, and also by some parents to track their children.

There is No One Perfect GPS for Hunting

That's right; there is no one perfect GPS for hunting. There may be one that you consider perfect for yourself, but probably not everyone has the same needs you do. However, overall there are highly recommended GPS for hunting out there, and they are all listed below. These are considered the best GPS for hunting. The hunting community has rated these as the most popular GPS for hunting. However, choosing a good GPS for hunting depends on what and how you, personally, plan on using your GPS for the hunt. I can't tell you the one single GPS that has been proven the best for hunting, though I have put together a list of the most qualified and top rated GPS for hunting. So I encourage you to look into each of these GPS and find what exactly it is that you are looking for and choose which GPS is best suited for you. GPS technology is constantly changing so check back often for updates.

Features of the Best GPS for Hunting:

-Long battery life (between 15-25 hours)

-Plenty of memory to hold waypoints (14-25 MB should be good)

-Easily portable/light weight (hand held)

-I hunt at night so a easily readable screen

-WAAS capability (allows for accuracy of up to 3 meters)

-Water proof/resistant

Top Rated GPS for Hunting

-Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx

-Garmin Etrex Camo

-Magellan Explorist 200

-Garmin GPS 60

Long Battery Life for a Handheld GPS

One of the best features a handheld GPS can have is a long battery life. Hunting is not a short event most go hunting for days even. A long battery life for a GPS can save a lot of frustration while hunting. It allows for longer hunting trips to locations you would not be able to go without a GPS with longer battery life. So be sure you add this feature to your list when deciding the best GPS for hunting.

GPS Needs Plenty of Memory While Hunting

It is a common practice to revisit waypoints several times because most hunters have spots they like. If you are one to revisit waypoints your GPS will start to run out of memory and no one wants to delete spots that have been good to them in the past for hunting. So when shopping for a GPS be sure you save yourself the hassle of having to decide which waypoints are more important and get plenty of memory for your hunting GPS.

Hunting GPS Should be Light Weight and Portable

No one enjoys walking around the woods hunting while carrying a big heavy burden of a GPS. There are some handheld GPS that weigh up to 3.5 pounds. That would be a terror to go hunting with. Anything over 2 pounds is a little to heavy to be considered in the best GPS for deer hunting category. So try and stay under 2 pounds when shopping for your hunting GPS.

GPS Should Have WAAS Capability to be Good for Hunting

WAAS has been around for awhile and yet many GPS owners still have no idea what it is. WAAS capability basically allows for a GPS unit's accuracy to be within 3 meters. When hunting you want to know exactly where you are and how far you have to go in case of an accident. So when deciding which GPS is the best for your hunting needs be sure to include WAAS capability as a must have feature.

When Hunting GPS Need to be Water Resistant/Water Proof

As most already know, hunting, is an outdoor sport, which means weather applys. When it comes to a $100+ piece of equipment thats primary use is outdoors you don't want a little water to ruin it. So be sure your hunting GPS is some what water resistant. Particularly if you are one to go hunting in the woods where there are plenty of places to accidentally drop the GPS into standing water.

Satellite Navigation - Is it for you?

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

Do you get behind the wheel and lose all sense of direction? Have your friends ever chuckled and laughed when you turn to them and say I am lost? Does the idea of stopping to ask for directions embarrass you?

Many will answer yes to at least one of the above questions. If you did then you are a great candidate for a satellite navigation system. With a sat nav, as some like to call them, you will never again have to stop for directions or feel embarrassed in front of friends again.

Embarrassment is not the only reason to consider the purchase of a satellite navigation system. Sat nav systems find the shortest route to your destination, this saves you time and fuel. Fuel prices are on the rise and getting lost can add up quickly. Some units will also divert you around traffic, this in turn can save you money and time.

What is a Sat Nav system? The system uses gps satellites to pinpoint your location down to yards. Your location is then overlaid on a map that you can view. The system uses this information to formulate a course to your destination.

Growing popularity of satellite navigation systems has brought the price down and enlarged the list of available features. Research is your best tool to find the perfect system to fit your needs. There are many companies, models and features to choose from in addition to price ranges.

Visiting electronic retailers will give you the opportunity to try out, first hand, many of the features that are available on the units. Testing out these features allows you to decide on what you would like to have in your own system. When your sat nav system arrives you will not have any surprises, since you have seen and used the systems in person.

Now that you know what features are available and have a list of them you would like to have on your unit, it is time to start shopping. The internet is key in finding the best price on a great gps navigation system. When shopping make sure to add in the cost of shipping and taxes if applicable.

When your new system arrives read through the entire manual and learn how to use the system before your first trip. Set up your trip in the sat nav system prior to departing as trying to program on the move is not safe. Enjoy your system and new found sense of security!

For more information on satellite navigation systems check out Sat Nav Guru, where you will find many styles of gps units.

Nevertheless, a hike or a saunter can expose you to the most natural, spontaneous beauty and re-connect you with the simplicity of nature. As John Muir stated "Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently, not 'hike' through them."

To saunter through the mountains is the best means to experience the beauty. Nature is preserved through National forests, thanks to great conservationists like John Muir and Ansel Adams (to name a few) in its 193 million acres of land. In other words, the size of Texas is disbursed throughout the United States making nature within everyone's reach.

Whether you are a speed hiker (and love the momentum) or prefer to saunter through the mountains, you'll need high quality, durable clothing, outer wear, equipment and accessories. Check out bargain outfitters that sell the top name gear and outerwear at a fraction of the price in the retail markets. You'll get great names including (but not limited to) Patagonia, Columbia, North Face, Bolle, Vasque, Burton, and Spyder.

You control your destiny with nature: how short, how long, how distant, or how near you want to saunter. Here is a recommended list of minimally what to pack for your day saunter through nature:

1. Topographical map and a compass (Check out altimeter watch)

2. Water: If you think you've packed enough, bring more. Or invest in a lightweight Katadyn water filter so you can pump, filter and replenish your own water source.

3. Sunglasses and Sunscreen. See Oakley sunglasses.

4. Layers of clothing: especially if climbing into the sub-alpine and alpine areas. The weather can change drastically. An altimeter watch, with a barometer reading is an excellent addition. Pack capilene and fleece underclothes, gloves, wool hat and rain repellant jacket and pants.

5. Snacks and food. A dehydrated low-fueled hiker is a doomed one.

6. Hike with someone-always! If you are determined to hike alone, be sure that you leave your hiking information and time of return with a friend. If you change your plans last minute, leave a note in your car. (Cell phones do not work in the great outdoors- so please don't rely on them).

7. Safety items must haves: first aid kit, matches, and emergency blankets. The Garmin GPS is a great addition for you who have a tendency to saunter and miss the turn.

8. Litter Bag- you must pack out what you pack in.

9. Bug Repellant and even Buz Off clothing. Just wear the clothes that contain a bug repellant without saturating your skin with the foul smelling, tasting deet.

10. Pack these essentials in a backpack that is right for your venture and your back. See shopping for the right backpack.

Gear for an optimum saunter was put to the test before listing it on this site. The footwear will support your feet and legs as they carry you through varied terrain. The outer wear will protect you from the elements of rain and snow yet allow your body to breathe. The site also features reputable reviews by experts from Outside Magazine, Outdoor Magazine and National Geographic.

For an overnight saunter or camping trip in the backcountry be sure to be prepared with an adequate sleeping bag, tent, and cooking mechanisms. Overnight camping in the great outdoors can be a wonderful experience when prepared. See Camping checklists. It's all here for you. It's only you that's holding the possibility back.

Fall in love again with nature. Saunter thru the mountains and be prepared. The options are endless. The choice is yours.

Luxe Electronic Gadgets Review

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

There are so many esoteric, eclectic electronic gadgets that it is difficult to separate the practical and purposeful from the frivolous and senseless. And when tastes and personal preferences are factored into the mix, it is not as simple as separating gold and tin into two discernible piles.

There are entire personal-communication systems that fit into mobile phones. Sunglasses and wristwatches now are multidimensional communications and entertainment products. Mobile phones not only serve as entertainment centers and GPS navigational systems, the units also are viewed as jewelry and complementing accessories to one's fashion persona.

Apparently, Baskin & Robbins was really onto something when it decided to offer as many flavors as possible and to treat each tasty twist with the same reverence usually reserved for vanilla and chocolate. B&R was among the first firms to grasp that true luxury embodies a wide berth of available options. If something is made well, it will appeal to consumers of discerning tastes. The marketplace for electronic gadgets and games is truly a phenomenon of the 21st century.

We eat blueberries and talk into BlackBerrys. It is difficult to say whether any gadgets or accessories will amaze and enthrall us like the abacus did the Babylonians back in 300 BCE. While, abaci, which are still in use today, have endured for centuries, the eras of eight-track tape players, rotary-dial telephones, and VCRs are already ancient history. Does anyone still remember when mobile phones were as large as one of Shaquille O'Neal's sneakers, or when television sets did not come with remote controls?

The ever-changing landscape of new electronic gadgets and games is a byproduct of modern technology that is evolving faster than ever. The Luxé Electronic Gadgets Review plugs into today's latest wizardry. However, do stay tuned for upgrades, enhancements, and new product introductions throughout the year.

When it comes to mobile phones with intelligence, the BlackBerry line is summa cum laude with its front-row bleeding-edge technology. After all, it is a handheld mobile phone that works like a multi-port personal computer. And if that isn't enough to prompt a wow from the galley, the new BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is smaller and sleeker than its magnificent predecessors. Aside from being a phone that allows international roaming between North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, it comes with multimedia capabilities and 64 MB of memory, which is easily expandable.

Wearable electronics sounds like something movie characters like Batman or James Bond might wear. Although the terminology possesses a futuristic, science-fiction tone, it accurately describes intelligently designed multiuse products, such as the O ROKR. The O ROKR is Oakley's fourth release of a pair of eyewear with a built-in mobile phone and an MP3 player. It is Bluetooth-driven eyewear. The O ROKR is a collaborative effort by Oakley and Motorola. The O ROKRs come in three distinct colors, and there are stylish versions of it for both men and women.

V-Moda presents "hearwear" that dazzles the eyes, perks the ears, and piques the interests of both fashion and music aficionados. The Modaphone Hearwear collection is a series of fashionable earphones with the sparkle of jewelry and the clarity of high-end earphones. There are four models. Each model is made from super-soft silicon with fittings that are offered in three sizes. The fabulous four are individually known as the Bass Fréq, the Vibe, the Remix M Class, and the Modawrap. The earphones are compatible complements to Apple's iPods, Microsoft's Zune, and various other MP3 players.

It is all in the numbers. Escort Radar manufactures the best radar/laser detectors, as the company owns over 85 percent of all radar and laser patents in use. Radar/laser detectors are legal to use in 49 states. Virginia and Washington, DC, are the only exceptions. With all the coupes, roadsters, sedans, and even SUVs capable of accelerating beyond 150 mph smoothly and effortlessly, it is easy to see how even the most responsible driver could err at a most inopportune time. Escort Radar's Passport 8500 X50 circumvents such mishaps from occurring.

Sony's S2 Sports Walkman MP3 Player is a fit gift for any athlete on the list. The two-gigabyte model stores up to 1,350 songs, and it plays up to 18 hours on an embedded battery that provides three hours on three-minute charge. It also contains an FM tuner for alternate listening choices to get through the workout time. The S2 is lightweight and has a bright, easy to read organic electroluminescence display.

It came as no surprise that when Motorola wanted to glitz out its RAZR V3i that a call was placed to the glamorous team of Domenico and Stefano to add the D and G magic. These guys could make cat litter glitter. So, ascending a streamline, renowned luxury cell phone to jewelry-level status would be a golden opportunity for them to leave another mark of distinction.

As long as the road is in North America, getting lost while driving will not happen if there is a StreetPilot in the vehicle. This GPS-satellite-navigational system, which is no larger than a baseball, is guaranteed to always pitch straight info to drivers. Plus it can easily be removed from one vehicle and placed in another, as it securely attaches to windshields with a suction cup. It is a perfect gift for the soon-to-be rich student, or an ideal addition to the classic car of a bygone era.

Having knowledge at your fingertips makes for a great metaphor. Having knowledgeable info conveyed instantly from an easy-to-use handheld device makes for a very innovative and entertaining product. The SkyScout by Celestron, with its advanced GPS technology, can be used during the day or night. Turn it on and its built-in menu provides operating info simple enough that even adults can operate it without muss of fuss.

When hip-hop, country or rock artists put out a song that has universal appeal beyond its anticipated audience, the hit song is a crossover. So, if a cell phone contains 140 grams of solid gold and is studded with diamonds, would it be a crossover into the jewelry marketplace as well as being a cell phone? There are so many people observed daily constantly holding cell phones against their ears. Many of these sleek machines could easily be mistaken for over-sized earrings. The Illusion, which is GoldVish's sparkling collection of personal luxury communication devices, is for real.

The Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Watch MBW-100 is a very practical, intelligent device that hits the underbelly of anyone who has ever imagined being a super sleuth or a suave secret agent like James Bond. The MBW-100 is a wristwatch with Bluetooth technology. When used with its wireless Bluetooth headset, the sophisticated wristwatch manages calls and music as simply as checking the time. This is a must-have for all lovers of bleeding-edge communications technology.

The thought of installing a telephone in one of the most intimate rooms in the house once left us bewildered, but this takes the cake. The iCarta dock from Atech Flash mounts easily onto the wall, charges your iPod while playing music, and features four integrated moisture-free speakers, which deliver exceptional clarity and high quality sound. The cost of replacing the NY Times for some Top 40 runs 100 dollars.

Auto gps systems. You might be asking what these are. To be more exact what is an auto gps system? The answer is both simple and complex. So let's start from the beginning. The letters gps stands for global positioning satellites. What this means is that with the help of satellites you can find any person, any place or even any street in the world.

These global positioning satellites or gps as we will be calling them use the coordinates you give them as well as the information from the satellites to show you certain positions. The auto gps systems use the satellites to help you find your way while you are traveling in the car. There are many different types of gps systems you can use for vehicles but they all operate on the same principles.

The first item you will find with these auto gps systems is the touch screen interface monitor. The easy to understand voice prompts will help to reinforce the directions you see on your gps monitor. In most of the auto gps systems you will have a section of the city map displayed clearly. You will see your position on the map clearly. The route you need to take will also be highlighted.

The auto gps systems will use the information about the city to show you the best (or shortest) routes to take. You will see where the railways crossing intersect the city roads. This will of course allow you to understand that if you are approaching any of these intersections your travel time may become changed or compromised.

To help you navigate the city street during the times when you are driving there is an electronic voice which will provide you with easy to understand yet simple directions. You will have the option of changing this voice from female to male as you desire. You should however be aware that due to electronic malfunctioning, the auto gps systems can and will fail.

There have been instances reported of people who use these systems getting lost or misdirected. There are also times when the auto gps systems will cause drivers to arrive at their destination hours later than usual. These occurrences however are relatively rare. You can avoid most of these such mishaps if you use your common sense in conjunction with the gps street maps.

The advances in technology are helping to devise better ways to navigate through the city streets. You will find that these auto gps systems will one day replace the need for bulky city and country maps altogether.

Combining PDAs and GPS

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

GPS is a system that's used by the military, companies, and individuals to plot locations on the surface of the earth. The use of GPS is predominantly commercial for creating driving directions for commercial vehicles and figuring out the fastest and most efficient routes to save costs. The Garmin Nuvi 350 is an example of such a GPS device. It comes with many preloaded maps and various Points of Interest which make it easier for the user to find stores, accommodation and even food wherever he or she may be with the ease of a touch screen.

The PDA can be described as a tiny personal computer that fits into your pocket. PDAs have seen huge developments, with some of them that can be used as cell phones as well, such as the RIM Blackberry. Celebrities always boost the popularity and sales of merchandise and the Blackberry is no exception.

The addition of GPS to PDAs has made them even more useful and popular. For finding maps and direction you can just turn on your PDA. One of the first devices to include GPS is the Garmin iQue300. Its GPS system was a Garmin and its PDA Operating System was that of Palm OS 5. An added feature of this device was that you could call up contact information through voice commands.

There will probably always be a debate on which is more preferable. Is it better to have one PDA with GPS, or have your GPS as a separate device?

Regardless of your choice, there are always benefits and drawbacks. You'll have to spend more money if you decide to go for two devices. Some of the GPS devices can be quite bulky and can be a problem if you need to carry them around with you. If you want to use GPS regularly, you'll be better off with one GPS PDA device. The downside of a single device is that you can use only one function at a time. A PDA also have a tiny screen, which could make reading the map quite cumbersome.

Your needs will drive your choice. If you are technophobic and want to keep using your PDA as a minicomputer and a phone; separate units are better for you. If you want to save some money and don't mind a little inconvenience, the combined device would be a better choice.

Author: Hal Studer. At you can get PDA assistance, as well as features of the Palm Treo 600.

Nearly all cell phone end users have a cell phone feature that they did not even realize they possessed. Not everyone recognizes that their phone is outfitted with a GPS tracking device. All the same, the question that comes up is that does that sound chilling or pretty neat? To the majority of individuals, it feels paradoxically both good and bad. Although more individuals are frightened that a GPS function on cell phones pulls us one step nearer to a 'Big Brother' kind of society, however many other people are enthusiastic for the abilities it provides users.

Nevertheless, where the line gets blurred is when safety is overshadowed by the potential for invasion of your privacy when the ability to track daily movements of an individual sets in. This gives rise to concerns of who has the ability to access such private information.

However, E911 has a relevant law that is fairly explicit in its orders. It gives the ability to carriers to give tracking location information to third parties for E911 emergency calls only, however this data cannot be furnished under any circumstance at all without the prior consent of the cell phone owner.

Their features that help consumers, such as maps, directions and restaurant and Movie Theater finding abilities, the GPS equipped cell phone supplies emergency call centers with data critical to preserving lives. Regrettably, it's rather frequently that a person dial 911 to report an accident, fire or other emergency, and whenever requested where they are, they can merely state the name of the city they are close to, or the interstate highway on which they are traveling on.

In such cases, the location information is inadequate. This is why cell phones are nowadays GPS enabled; call centers can detect your position through GPS in the same manner they have been able to trace calls from land-lines for so numerous years.

What's In It for Consumers?

Although the above-mentioned safety option is meant to be used for emergency uses, cell phone companies have brought the GPS cell phone far beyond this rudimentary 911-enhanced phone. In order to make GPS attractive to customers, cell phone suppliers have produced numerous methods that cell phone end users can utilize the GPS feature on cell phones for themselves, irrespective of whether or not the 911-enhancement is ever used.

The majority of cell phone service providers have made directions and maps ready to be used as part of the GPS feature of their phones. Before you become too charged up in regards to this, you have to recognize that this service is not a free additional bonus on your present service; employing your cell phone for maps and directions calls for an added service plan that amounts to about $10 per month. If you are averse to still added monthly subscription to be paid-up, there are software programs that, for a one-time-only-fee of purchasing the software, can add similar features to your GPS cell phone.

As technology move ahead, several of these GPS cell phones can still be used as handheld GPS devices merely to be utilized during walking or biking. The prior and less costly variations need an antenna on your car in addition to a console in your car, only the wave of the future is upon us, if users are ready to pay the price for it. It appears that even now numerous consumers are buying into the navigation generation of cell phones.

A GPS or Global Positioning System was in the beginning produced and controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense. Prior to it being utilized for commercial-grade reasons, the satellite system was utilized by the military for day-and-night navigation for earth, sea and air operations. As the GPS became extensively utilized for commercial purposes, its operations extended to allow for surveillance and movement of individuals, map making, forestry, mineral exploration, tracking down of endangered wildlife in their natural habitation and much more.

In the beginning, the Global Positioning System functioned on prominent computer systems but finally; it has developed into something more pocket-sized - the handheld GPS. The beneficial news about the handheld GPS is that it operates just like the GPS in more elaborate devices and it give the the user the ability to produce information anywhere and anytime he or she may choose. Handheld GPS have now earned such a following that there are numerous individuals all over the world that invariably depend upon the handheld GPS to assist them in navigating across the earth and find places which are even outside the navigation and location discovery ability in just the recent past.

Popular Handheld GPS Models

View an entire web page with a single stroke of the key - zoom in or out as the occasion demands and have the history automatically saved so you can go back to where you started. You can access those important emails along with any attachments. And you can connect to your compatible PC via three different ways. If you feel like watching a video, you can use a TV-out cable or UpnP on your compatible home electronic device.

Want music? Stream it seamlessly to your compatible headphones, car or home stereo. Or you can hook up to your favourite home stereo speakers or headphones. All this with a 5-megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics, a 2.6" display, 2GB of memory and support for RSS feeds says it is a computer. I wonder why they called it a Mobile Imaging Device? In any case, it deserves the 2007 European MID award. Oh, and if you wanted to download those movies, go ahead. It's no problem for the N95.

Look for a Nokia n95 in the mobile phones category as well as other electronics online.

The early handheld or portable GPS units were designed for military personnel. They tended to be bulkier and somewhat cumbersome to use. Now that GPS technology has been made available to civilians, the GPS units themselves have improved in one essential area of design: portability. The new portable GPS units allow consumers to have as much GPS power as soldiers have and in some cases have more features. This article will discuss the three types of portable GPS units available on the market: GPS units used exclusively for tracking purposes, GPS units designed for navigation and portable GPS units which can be used for both.

Portable GPS units designed for tracking are available in a variety of forms. The first are known as GPS auto trackers. The portable version of GPS auto trackers are usually battery-operated and can be conveniently put in the car's glove compartment. The next type of portable GPS unit with tracking capabilities are personal GPS systems. They can be a small device that looks like a cell-phone, (which can be placed in one's pocket, purse or backpack), built in special GPS watches or even in tennis shoes. These systems can be used to track loved ones, (especially children), or for exercise performance purposes. The latter is done by allowing a person to track how far and fast they might have walked or jogged. Finally, there are GPS units that can track expensive personal belongings, such as laptops. These types of portable GPS units can be placed in a USB or flash card slot.

On the other end of the spectrum are portable GPS units designed for navigation, also known as GPS navigators. GPS navigators can either be handheld or designed for use in a car. Handheld GPS navigators look similar to a cell phone. The graphics can either be in color or in black or white. GPS navigators designed for the car are generally rectangular and can be connected to the windshield by suction cups. Both types of GPS navigators allow a person to obtain directions and maps as they are on the road. Sophisticated portable GPS navigators communicate directions through a computer-generated voice.

Combination portable GPS units are designed for both navigational and tracking capabilities. An example can be seen through GPS-enabled cell phones. The downside to these at least in comparison to GPS navigators is that they only work in areas that have that particular cell phone company's coverage. If the area does not have coverage, the cell phone GPS won't work well. However the portable GPS units navigation capabilities are not affected by poor cell phone coverage.

Portable GPS units can be used for tracking, navigation or a combination of the two. Indeed, these GPS units offer quite a bit of GPS power, considering their reduced size. With a device that is small enough to fit in one's pocket, people are offered two things: the ability to get to their chosen destination on time or the ability to keep a 'virtual' eye on expensive possessions or loved ones. Price-wise portable GPS units with the tracking capability will be a bit more expensive, but in the long run when one is ensured that everything and everyone most dear to them is where they are supposed to be, it won't take long to realize the money would be well-spent.

Garman GPS, Navigation Made Easy

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

Garman, established in 1989, has lead the way when it comes to creating the most innovative GPS products. The first Garman GPS unit was geared towards a specialized group of consumers: mariners. The next Garman GPS units created were designed for military use. Then came the GPS unit marketed and designed for 'average' consumers: the Forerunner. Worn on the arm, the Forerunner allowed runners to track their progress. Now, Garmin GPS have expanded their market including all sorts of navigational GPS units that can be of interest to anyone interested in any amount of traveling or sports. This article will discuss the types of Garman GPS units currently available.

The first category of Garman GPS products are those designed for use on the road. These products include: automotive GPS units, motorcycle GPS units and traffic receivers. The automotive GPS and motorcycle GPS units work the same way; they are used to help navigate the driver through whatever area they desire to go to. This is done through maps and directions, which are provided right on the Garmin GPS screen. The traffic receiver is an add-on for Garman GPS motorcycle or automotive products. It outputs traffic information onto the screen.

The second category of Garman GPS products are those that Garman categorizes as being for 'on-the-go' use. These include: GPS products for mobile phones, laptops, PDAs and Garman GPS personal assistants. The Garmin GPS products designed for mobile phones, laptops or PDAs are basically add-ons that give these devices navigational capabilities. The add-ons for mobile phones or PDAs contain a special suction cup that allows the device to be put on the windshield, to allow for easier use in the car. The Garman GPS personal assistant, on the other hand, is a completely separate device. It offers navigational capabilities along with other features typical to an electronic assistant, such as a calculator, world travel clock and currency converter.

The third category of Garman GPS products are those designed for hiking, hunting and other activities that involve wandering around. The simpler of these units can be described as an electronic compass. The hiker enters in where they want to go, and the unit basically 'points' them in the proper direction. The more sophisticated Garman GPS hiking products do this along with providing mapping information. Some also include walkie-talkie features. There is even a unit that allows hunters to track their dogs.

The fourth category of Garman GPS products are those designed for general fitness. For runners, there is the above-mentioned Forerunner, which is basically a Garmin GPS wristwatch. Bicyclers can use The Edge, a Garman GPS product that can attach in the middle of the bicycle's handlebars. Both the Forerunner and the Edge track how far a person as traveled in addition to other things essential for fitness, such as calories, speed and heart rate.

The fifth category of Garman GPS products are those designed for individuals traveling on or in water. These include Garman GPS chartplotters, marine handhelds, fish finders and radar devices. GPS chartplotters offer navigational information pertinent for marine purposes while Garmin GPS marine handhelds offer this and can be used underwater, (making it useful for divers). Garman GPS fish finders help fisherman locate fish. Finally, Garman GPS radar devices help boaters see how traffic is on the water.

The sixth and last category of Garman GPS products are those designed for use in the air. These devices can be actual cockpits or other types of avionics equipment or portable GPS devices. The portable GPS devices in this category can be used for navigation not only in the air but also at sea or on land.

In conclusion, Garman GPS products allow all kinds of individuals the ability to know exactly where they are going. If one is an owner of any of the products discussed in this article, never again should they have to worry about having to use the term 'lost.'

Nextar, a company specializing in electronics equipment, has entered the spectrum of GPS technology through its line of GPS units. These units are designed to meet Nextar's basic quality requirements. This means that they contain the most attractive design, are created with the latest technology and are affordable. Nextar is particularly concerned that their products are affordable, since the GPS industry often contains GPS units that are not priced reasonably. This article will delve into the wonder that is Nextar GPS by providing information on two of the most recommended Nextar GPS models: the X3 and the P7.

The first Nextar GPS model that will be evaluated is the X3, which costs $349.99. The Nextar GPS X3 offers features common to most GPS units, including color display touch screen, voiced directions and suction cups to allow the unit to be put on the windshield of a car. Additional features that may be considered add-ons for other types of GPS units include pre-programmed maps of all of the states in the U.S. and 1.6 million points of interest. The Nextar GPS X3 can also act as a MP3 player, if the user has an SD card, which would be a separate purchase. The device is also designed to be seen both during the day or during the night.

The second Nextar GPS model that will be discussed is the P7, which is priced at $599.99. Just like the Nextar GPS X3, the Nextar GPS P7 offers color display touch screen, voiced directions and suction cups. Unlike the Nextar GPS X3, the Nextar GPS P7 contains preloaded maps of both the United States and Canada with 2 million POIs. It also has a 40 Gigabyte hard drive, so a user doesn't have to worry about dealing with SD cards when wanting to play music. The product also contains built-in speakers and a built-in GPS antenna. Additionally, the Nextar GPS P7 can 'auto-recalculate' when a driver misses a turn.

In conclusion, if one is interested in buying a Nextar GPS model they should consider getting the X3 or the P7. Many more Nextar GPS brands exist, but these are the ones that offer the most availability. The Windows Time service (W32Time) is designed to allow all Windows 2000 or later machines in an organisation to utilise a synchronised time. The service is used to ensure the security of the Windows Kerberos authentication protocol. This article describes the procedure to set up an Authoritative Time Server for a Windows 2003 Server based Active Directory Network. It also describes the hierarchical relationship of the time synchronisation authority. The article also presents some time synchronisation hints, tips and troubleshooting.

The 'Windows Time' Hierarchy.

The Windows Time Service uses a hierarchical synchronisation structure. By default, Windows computers utilise the following hierarchy:

- All time client workstations nominate their domain controller as their time synchronisation source.

- All member servers also nominate their domain controller as their time synchronisation source.

- All domain controllers in a domain nominate the primary domain controller (PDC) as their time synchronisation source.

- All Primary Domain controllers follow the hierarchy of domains in the selection of their time synchronisation source.

In the hierarchy the PDC emulator in the forest root domain is the primary time reference for the organisation. The PDC in the forest root domain can have its internal reference clock controlled in a number of ways:

- By utilising it's own internal system clock. However, unsynchronised system clocks will drift significantly over time.

- By synchronising to an Internet based NTP time server. An accurate time can be obtained from an Internet NTP server, however, this raises security issues since accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Also, the NTP port in the firewall must be left open for synchronisation. Additionally, Internet based NTP servers cannot provide authentication, so the source of time cannot be guaranteed.

- By synchronising with a local intranet based NTP time server. A local NTP server has the advantage of providing a traceable time reference and also secure authentication.

- By utilising a hardware reference clock such as a GPS or time and frequency radio based time transmission. A GPS or radio based hardware reference clock provides a secure traceable time reference.

Windows Time Service Configuration.

Configuration of the Windows Time Service is carried out by editing registry entries. It is highly recommended that the registry be backed up before conducting any modifications. This allows the registry to be restored in the event of erroneous modification.

To configure the PDC master to utilise its internal system clock requires only that the W32Time registry entry 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags' is set to 'A'. This makes the PDC announce itself as a reliable time source. However, the system clock can drift over time and is not referenced to an accurate time source. Additionally, Windows Time will periodically generate system event log warnings indicating that the PDC should be configured to synchronise to an external time source. This warning can be ignored.

To configure the PDC to to synchronise to an external time reference, the following registry entries must be modified:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type

This registry entry specifies the types of peers that the Windows Time Service will synchronise to. Change the registry entry to 'NTP' to synchronise to an external NTP server.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\AnnounceFlags

The 'Announce Flags' registry entry indicates that the PDC should announce itself as a reliable time source. Set this registry entry to the value '5'.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer

The 'NtpServer' registry indicates that non-standard mode combinations are allowed in synchronisation between peers. This entry should be set to the value 1.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

The 'NtpServer' registry entry contains a space-delimited list of stratum 1 time servers from which the PDC can obtain time. If DNS names are used rather than IP addresses, you must append 0x1 to the end of each DNS name.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\SpecialPollInterval

The 'Special Poll Interval' registry entry indicates the period, in seconds, between each poll of a NTP server. Microsoft recommends a value of 900 seconds which transposes to one poll every 15 minutes.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxPosPhaseCorrection

The 'MaxPosPhaseCorrection' field indicates the maximum positive time correction in seconds that the time service can make. If a time correction larger than the maximum is required the time service logs an Event in the Event Log. If this field is set to 0xFFFFFFFF a time correction is always made regardless of size. A suitable value may be 3600 seconds (1 hour).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\MaxNegPhaseCorrection

The 'MaxNegPhaseCorrection' field indicates the maximum negative time correction in seconds that the time service can make. If a time correction larger than the maximum is required the time service logs an Event in the Event Log. If this field is set to 0xFFFFFFFF a time correction is always made regardless of size. A suitable value may be 3600 seconds (1 hour).

After the registry entries have been correctly modified, the Windows Time service must be stopped and restarted. At a command prompt enter 'net stop w32time && net start w32time' to restart the service.

Hints and Tips.

The correct operation of the Windows Time service depends heavily on the correct functioning of network devices and infrastructure. Common problems such as TCP/IP connectivity, DNS resolution, inaccurate NTP time references and network delay can all cause problems with the synchronisation service. Additionally, when synchronising to an Internet NTP server, ensure that USP port 123 is open on the firewall. UDP port 123 is the port reserved for NTP communication packets.

James Kesel, MS is the Publisher of GPS Auto Tracker providing information on the latest GPS Tracking and Navigation systems.

Since the terrorist attacks on 9/11, there has been an increased demand for improved 911 emergency calling capabilities. This demand, in turn, has resulted in better cell phone GPS tracking technology. After the events of 9/11, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released orders requiring all cell phone carriers to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to locations within 100 meters or less.

In order to conform to these requirements set by the FCC, most cell phone carriers have decided to integrate the GPS technology into their cell phone handsets. Many have opted for this move rather than overhauling the tower network.

However, the cell phone GPS tracking in most mobile phones is not like those in your handy GPS receiver which allows you to take hiking in the outdoors. Most cell phones do not even allow the user direct contact to the GPS data. There are also some units that accurate location data is only recorded if an emergency call is made or if special arrangements are made with a location-based service provider (LBS).

There is still hope for the cell phone carriers to gain the cell phone GPS tracking services. Actually, there are now fully GPS-enabled phones that can be used in conjunction with third-party location-based services. To mention just a few, these GPS-enabled phones include Nokia, Motorola, and Beneflon.

Here is an overview of these popular cell phones with GPS tracking devices:

Nokia of Finland

In recent years, Nokia announced plans to make the Xpress-On GPS optional hardware available to 5140 phone users in North America. Their Xpress-On GPS optional hardware makes it possible to use location service applications over GSM wireless networks.

Motorola

You may already know that Motorola manufactures a series of cell phone GPS tracking units for Nextel. In particular, these cell phone GPS tracking units include the Motorola i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 and i830 iDEN(TM). According to Motorola, the programmability of these GPS-enabled cell phones allows the developers to create applications that make the GPS data much more readily available to the user, as well as the location-based service providers.

Nextel Phones

Nextel is now offering a number of cell phone GPS tracking solutions that can be used with the aforementioned Motorola phones. One of the most notable cell phone GPS tracking solutions that have been developed by Nextel is the Mobile Locator. Affiliates of Nextel have supplied other solutions, as have Mapquest, Trimble and other third parties.

Beneflon

Beneflon has already developed two cell phone GPS tracking devices, the Track Pro and ESC. As often asserted, these solutions are high-end cell phones designed for use in professional security and personal safety applications. These also include a fully-functioning GPS which provides accurate location data to the user without assistance from the network. And, it is important to note that while these are not Internet enabled devices, they have a number of features perfectly suited for interactive communication between the user and a service center. And, perhaps what is best about Beneflon cell phone GPS tracking equipment is that Beneflon itself is a multi-band GSM wireless network phone that can be used in a number of countries around the world.

The Importance of a precise Time Server

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

This article tells you about the significance of network time synchronization and how important it is to have an accurate network time server source in a Company.

Every Computer has a clock that sustains the internal system time. PC clocks have low- cost crystal oscillators that are notoriously prone to drift. Each Computer can drift at different rates.

The time difference can become bigger and bigger over a period of time. This can lead to huge problems within the Company. This article conveys the value of network time synchronization and having an accurate network time server source in an organization.

Computer Time: Computer system time is maintained by low cost real time clock and crystal oscillator components. Crystal oscillators are built with very low tolerance; each oscillates at a slightly different rate. The temperature variation make the crystal change its frequency. This is one of the reason why computers are weak in keeping up an accurate time. it is necessry to synchronise the Computers otherwise they will drift at a slightly different quantity.

Each computer need a network time that is correctly synchronized otherwise it can cause huge problems, especially in transaction- processing surroundings. Unsynchronized PCs can lead to fraud and other problems that can be caused in an environment where synchronized time is needed. Problems can arise with shared network files; the reason is because the unsynchronized computers are using the same resource.

Network Time Servers: Network Time servers gain precise time from an external time reference and offer (presents) an accurate time source to network time clients. Time server use the Network Time Protocol (NTP), which is a UDP based protection over TCP/IP. There is a number of options that can be used to get an accurate time. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) offers a highly accurate time; all that is needed is a clear view to the sky. Another alternative would be radio frequency. The main countries that provide radio frequency are England (MSF); Germany (DCF-77) and the US (WWVB). Other countries are France (TDF); Canada (CHU); Japan (JJY) and Switzerland (HBG) and it is possible to obtain time from mobile phone network.

Internet Time Servers: There are a lot of Internet based NTP time server resources offered that can be used for network time synchronization. The Internet Time Server can cause Problem for the Company's Computers. The time server is located outside the firewall, so a port must be left open to access the time server. This does not just lead to Security implications, but also to problems with the time server accuracy, reliability and provision.

Local Dedicated Network Time Server: A local devoted network time server overcome many problems related to Internet based references. The time server is located inside the security firewall and does not need any external access. Also, a local time server can improve accuracy due to reliable network paths between clients and server.

To resume, the network time synchronization is an important factor in Computer network installations. Unlike the internet based network time servers, which are known for they security problems, local dedicated network time servers overcome the security problems by offering secure, accurate and reliable network time synchronization resolution.

PDAs Even Come With GPs

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

GPS is a system that's used by the military, companies, and individuals to plot locations on the surface of the earth. These devices are mainly used commercially as high-end maps which offer detailed directions to a plethora of locations in the country. The Garmin Nuvi 350 is an example of such a GPS device. Finding accommodation, food outlets, gas stations, and more is very easy with this device because it contains maps and points of interest.

A PDA is a Personal Digital Assistant or a "pocket computer" in layman's terms. The RIM Blackberry is a perfect example of a PDA that's developed into a cell phone as well, with its advanced audio capabilities. This phone has been dominating the PDA market over many years and continues to gain popularity due to celebrities such as Paris Hilton using them.

Therefore, GPS PDAs are PDAs which have the added function of being GPS enabled. For finding maps and direction you can just turn on your PDA. An example of this device may be the Garmin iQue300 which holds the honor of being the first PDA to include GPS technology. Its GPS system was a Garmin and its PDA Operating System was that of Palm OS 5. An added feature of this device was that you could call up contact information through voice commands.

However, the debate rages on as to which is better? Is it better to have one PDA with GPS, or have your GPS as a separate device?

Regardless of your choice, there are always benefits and drawbacks. Two separate devices will definitely work out to be more expensive. Some of the GPS devices can be quite bulky and can be a problem if you need to carry them around with you. In such situations you will be best suited with a GPS PDA phone. With a single device it's rather difficult and inconvenient to use both the phone and GPS at the same time. A PDA also have a tiny screen, which could make reading the map quite cumbersome.

All in all, it depends on your needs. If your primary use of the PDA is as a phone and organizer, then two separate devices would be better. If you want to save some money and don't mind a little inconvenience, the combined device would be a better choice.

At you can get PDA assistance, as well as information on the Blackberry 8800.

GPS devices work by receiving signals from satellites in the Navstar GPS network that consists of 30 satellites orbiting the earth every 12 hours and 5 ground stations that monitor their positions in space. In order for a GPS device to work effectively it must receive signals from at least 4 of these satellites to get what is called a 3D fix and to do this the GPS's antenna needs an unobstructed view of the sky. The GPS unit uses a computer with software containing map files and other data to compare the information it gets from the satellites in order to show your current position in real time. How well your GPS works will depend on the quality of the receiver and location of the antenna. The satellite signals can also be blocked by geographical features such as heavily wooded areas, buildings, overpasses, tunnels etc.

There are many models of GPS to choose from, some are meant to be installed in a vehicle while others are more portable for pedestrian use while some have features of both such as voice prompted turn by turn directions, detailed street maps and point of interest databases yet are small enough to fit in your pocket.

Some features to look for in a GPS would include a good color screen that can be viewed in all lighting conditions, including direct sunlight, and from various angles.

You should look for a model that has street level maps if you intend to use it for vehicle navigation. This information could be acquired in different ways. Some portable models use a method where you plug the GPS into a USB port on your computer to download the latest software and maps while some in dash types may use CD-ROM discs to get this information and other smaller models may use memory cards. Depending on the manufacturer, you will probably have to pay some type of fee to access this information. In general GPS systems that use NavTeq or TeleAtlas digital maps are some of the most accurate for mapping detail.

Most GPS units have the standard features such as text prompted generic driving instructions that give directions in measured distance from point to point or turn to turn but some of the newer models are more sophisticated with street names and point of interest databases such as airports, hospitals, gas stations, restaraunts and shopping locations. This is especially helpful when traveling in unfamiliar locations. This is also true of automatic routing capabilities where the device can give you a route from point to point such as locations in your address book or your present location to other points of interest. You should also look for automatic rerouting capabilities where you can get a new route from your present location if you happen to take a wrong turn for some reason and get off course. You can program your route ahead of time choosing to take the shortest or quickest path and even tell the GPS to avoid certain streets if you have reason to believe there may be construction or other traffic problems. Some of the better or more expensive models have voice guided directions that will give you advance notice of turns you need to make next after you complete each maneuver and if your device has text to speech ability it can give you the actual street names you should be looking for.

Your GPS could also have touch screen controls, variable map perspectives such as 3D and bird's eye views and real time traffic and weather alerts. These last two will probably require a paid subscription service. You may be able to get auxiliary antennas that mount at the base of your windshield to improve signal reception or low profile external mounting kits that allow you to mount your antenna on the rear trunk lid.

No doubt there are many things to consider when looking for a GPS unit. You should start by considering just what you will be using it for and how portable it needs to be then consider how much you want to spend. After you determine these factors then you should look at what kind of features you can get for the money you have to spend and be sure to check several different brands and models befrore you decide.

“How Do I Choose A Dog For Me”

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

The one thing that is usually forgotten when folks go looking for a dog, and this is a very big item, who is going to train your dog. Training and socializing are two things that are very rarely thought of when a dog is being sought and they are probably two of the most important. So when you are looking for a dog you also have to be willing to make a commitment, not only to yourself but also to the dog. You will have to commit to teaching as well as loving and taking care of them. More to this than just getting a puppy isn't there?

You will need to ask yourself what one of the many breeds out there are you interested in. If you are a first time dog owner (pet) then I would suggest that you go to your local shelter and see what they have to offer. The reason I suggest this is because mutts and I hate that word, but dogs of various beginnings seem to be healthier (stronger immune system) than pure breeds, and for the most part a better disposition for beginners. Also the dogs you get from the shelter will or should have had all of their shots updated and have gotten a physical. That way you shouldn't get any surprises. That doesn't guarantee your dogs health 100% but it sure starts you out right.

You need to ask yourself "Will I like having this dog around all the time?" "Will I Like this dog five years from now the same or more than I do today?" and as corny as it sounds but it's true "Can I love this dog enough to put certain parts of my life on hold or change all together?" If you can honestly answer these questions with a yes then I'd say that you are ready to assume the responsibility of getting a dog. I'm a firm believer in that you don't actually pick your dog they pick you. I have had cat owners tell me the same thing and we all know how finicky and unreasonable cats are. Animals are great judges of character so when you are choosing your dog be in tune to the situation. Watch for little things especially from puppies. Watch for that one that looks back into your eyes as you are looking into theirs and all you can see is how much they want to be around you. It's there you just have to accept it. Or the one that is sitting at your feet, not crawling all over you though this could be a signal too, but the one that is just sitting there being at peace just because it's near you. I know it all sounds a little corny but give it a try what do you have to loose?

In closing the important thing you need to do when choosing a dog is ask the important questions above. Why do I want one? Do I have the time? If you answer these questions honestly then you should have no problem getting the answer. Dogs are some of the "best" friends we could ever ask for and all they want from us is attention and to be loved.

Building a Stratum 1 GPS NTP Server

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) was developed to provide a way of synchronising Internet clients to an accurate network time reference. NTP allows the time on client computers to be set to within a fraction of the correct time. The NTP protocol is a suite of programs designed specifically for time synchronisation purposes. The application source code is freely downloadable from the NTP website. Originally developed for the Linux operating system, NTP has since been ported to Microsoft Windows platforms.

Combining an accurate external timing reference with the NTP application provides a highly accurate network timing device. This article describes how to utilise a low-cost GPS receiver in combination with the NTP software distribution to provide an accurate stratum 1 NTP server timing reference.

The NTP source code can be obtained from the NTP website and must be compiled on the local machine. The downloadable NTP tar file extracts to a directory where scripts are available to make compilation and configuration very straight-forward. Linux distributions such as Redhat and Debian install the NTP distribution by default. To set up and install a stratum 1 time server a stable external timing reference is required. The NTP software provides a large number of reference clock drivers that can be utilised to interface with a range of hardware timing references. Dedicated hardware timing devices can be prohibitively expensive. However, the popularity of GPS navigation devices has reduced the cost of GPS technology. Low-cost GPS receivers are now readily available from around $100. Many GPS receivers have a RS232 serial communications port, which can easily be connected to a PC. Many low-cost GPS devices use the NMEA protocol, which is a standard GPS protocol for providing location and timing information. The timing information can be utilised by the NTP software as an accurate timing reference to provide a stratum 1 NTP server.

The NTP software needs to be compiled with the NMEA reference clock driver to interface with the GPS receiver. Once compiled the application must be configured to utilise the correct serial port. On completion, the NTP software will provide a highly accurate stratum 1 NTP server resource.

A NTP server can be utilised to synchronise time on most computer operating systems and network infrastructure. Any network device that has an integrated NTP client can be configured to synchronise time with the NTP server. Generally, clients only need the IP address of the NTP server for synchronisation. With a NTP server, you can synchronise almost any device on your network.

3 Tips When Choosing a Handheld GPS Device

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

Choosing a handheld GPS device doesn't have to be as frightening as it might seem. Although there are a number of these devices available, you can quickly and easily eliminate a few of them from your list of potential purchases based on some very basic features.

The Evolving GPS System

GPS systems have come a long way since they were first devised. Nonetheless, the basic concept, screens, and menus of handheld GPS systems are not much different from each other. In order to select the one that is right for you, you will need to consider the "extras" that the device has to offer. Be sure to compare all of the features individually and to consider your lifestyle and the primary purpose of the device.

Therefore, you system needs to have the ability to be updated with the most current information. Ideally, the system should allow for removable memory. That way, it can be easily updated and you can utilize whichever form of software you need for your particular purpose.

Black and White Versus Color

When shopping for a portable GPS device, you will have the option of purchasing one that displays in color or one that displays in black and white. Usually, the black and white models are less expensive. On the other hand, color models generally provide a much clearer image and a more pleasant user interface. Before deciding on saving money with a black and white display, be sure to use a display model at the store in order to see if the black and white display is problematic for you.

Most users consider a few features to be must-haves with their GPS handheld device. These include the ability to read maps, an expandable memory, and the option to add an antenna if necessary. For those looking for a top of the line unit, however, a color screen, an electronic compass, and an altimeter are also great features to have.

Technology Behind the Sat Nav

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

Introduction

Satellite navigation isn't rocket science once you know how. Satellite Navigation was originally designed for military applications. The first satellite navigation system was Transit, a system deployed by the US military in the 1960s. For these reasons, a satellite navigation system is an essential asset for any aspiring military power. However due to the growing use of satellite navigation e.g. marine use, engineering use and the ever growing in car sat use the growth of satellite navigation for everyday applications is set to continue.

Accuracy

In general, the more satellites used the greater the positioning accuracy. Numerous errors can degrade the accuracy of a positioning. Therefore, the accuracy of the navigation solution depends on how the receiver compensates for the different error sources. This is largely dependent on how the manufacturers of satellite navigation systems implement the relevant decoding on their receivers. Most publicly available receivers have an accuracy if about 5-10 metres. However in built up areas where the signals from the satellites can be corrupted the accuracy can be a little worse. Given the military put the system in place you can be their accuracy will be a lot better than that seen by the public.

Position

Satellite navigation receivers reduce errors by using combinations of signals from multiple satellites and multiple correlators, and then using techniques such as Kalman filtering to combine the noisy, partial, and constantly changing data into a single estimate for position, time, and velocity. Three and four satellites are the minimum needed to determine positions on the surface of the Earth and above it. This is done from a global network of reference stations on the ground, whose positions are known to within centimetres. The best known is called differential satellite navigation, which uses a fixed receiver in a known position as a reference. GPS receivers, which use differential GPS, can have an accuracy error of less than 1 metre and even down to a few centimetres. This type of receiver is now commonly used in many civil engineering works.

How the public benefit from satellite navigation (Sat nav)

The explosion of sat nav usage is due to the low sat nav costs and how practical they are, especially if you are driving alone and you have no one to help map read. With more and more motorists venturing abroad in their cars the sat nav is an indispensable device to help them navigate around foreign countries. The latest sat nav systems also incorporate Traffic Congestion warnings and then work out an alternative route, with voice instructions, to help avoid a lengthy delay in traffic.

Conclusion

Satellite navigation is increasingly becoming a vital component of aircraft, ships and cars and Europe is concerned about relying entirely on the US system. The clearest of these is the fact that satellite navigation will become a fully redundant service for civil aviation users in the event of a satellite or system failure.

Ford Truck Mobile Office Desk Reviews

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

With the need for information and communication in industry moving at light speed, there is a growing demand for mobile office technology and equipment. The solution is a truck desk laptop mounting desk, or mobile office laptop stand.

Truck desks attach to the passenger seat bolts, and fit in all the Super Duty trucks including the F-250, F-350, F-450 and the F-550. Thye provide a sturdy, durable work environment so the user can maintain the luxury of having the laptop at their fingertips, and creates a mobile office environment. With this application there is no need for drilling or using brace legs for stability. The design of this mount enables the truck desk to mount to the front two passenger seat bolts. The mount can be easily installed by one person with the aid of a few tools. Once the base is in place the vertical tube and rod can be positioned and tightened with the ease of a ratchet.

Almost all feature an extension rod which enables the desktop to clear any center console. An articulating arm is then attached which extends horizontally for driver convenience. The main desktop is constructed of durable abs plastic and can pivot up to 90 degrees, and turns 360 degrees for optimumal positioning. It comes with foam pads which have several advantages. One is shock absorption or vibration dampening while driving, and another is creating passive air flow for the cooling fans. The pads also ensure that the laptop will not slide around on the desktop while traveling.

To further personalize the application, an array of accessories is available, such as a Screen holder for those using GPS or mapping software. Cell Phone or PDA Holders, and lights are also popular additions. Since the base is under the seat, and the vertical assembly comes up beside the left leg of the passenger, space is not lost. Either the driver or passenger can use the laptop due to the hundreds of positions the desktop can be set at. The range of motion is controlled by self-ratcheting handles on all of the pivot points. The positions are changed easily and quickly with this unique system.

Before mobile offices had the option of a truck desk the notebook computer would usually ride on the center console or passenger seat, and possibly become a flying object if the brakes were put of hard. The laptop is then compromised, and the cost of replacement will be substantially higher than the initial cost of the mounting system. The desktop can swing out of the way of the air bags, and the operator doesn't have to twist around to use their computer. Another feature is being able to stand outside the vehicle on the passenger side and still be able to use the notebook as it reaches over to that side.

This laptop auto desk has endured many years of rigorous testing with industries ranging from law enforcement, construction, and oilfield to name a few. The F 250 Enforcer mount can be used for years, with the same base working in the previous six years of Super Duty trucks since there is no change in the floor pattern.Value. The Enforcer II for the F-250, F-350, F-440 and F-550 is the strongest, most durable Super Duty truck auto desk on the market, designed for those who must have the best tools to tackle the toughest jobs.

Family Road Trip Advice

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

There are many reasons to take a Road Trip. You might have specific destination in mind where it is more cost efficient to take a Road Trip than to fly or use other means of travel. Another reason to go on a trip is to inspect other parts of the country if you are going to move from your current residence. My favorite reason for a Road Trip is one of the best ways for a family to have great experiences and memories. This reason for a road trip is simply to be with family to encounter unique and wonderful sites and experiences. If your reason is the latter, there are a few helpful hints to help make the trip more seamless and a little bit easier, so it will be more enjoyable. Choosing destinations and packing the correct supplies, keeping accurate and organized records, and using the tools available to you will make your trip easier and more pleasant for your entire family.

One of the first things you have to tackle when it comes to taking a pleasure road trip is choosing your destination and packing correct supplies. Deciding what location you want to visit can be tricky. What is required is taking some time to research the sites that are available to tourists in America. Another requirement is to decide how long you wish to be gone and how far away from home you wish to travel. Considering all these factors is the key in choosing a destination for your trip, whether a short trip or a long trip.

Another priority to getting a road trip started off right is packing correct supplies. It may seem somewhat trivial, but planning a trip is much better when it is indeed planned correctly. Organization is a key to having the best time without worrying about mishaps that can happen when things aren't planned. There are some things that happen that are beyond our control, whether we plan or not. We don't need to add insult to injury by allowing things that we can control to ruin our plans. Besides the necessities of clothes, toiletries, other things are needed to be in as complete control of your trip as possible. If you are worried about cost, a great way to save money is instead of eating out the entire time you are on the road, try substituting sandwich fixings instead. Carrying a small cooler with food and drinks can help substantially lessen your costs. Another thing you can do to diminish your costs. It helps to plan where you are staying. If you can, costs would definitely lessen if there were alternative arrangements for lodging made. For example, if you have relatives near the destination you desire, that would be the best thing. If not, making reservations at the most cost effective hotels along the way can help reduce cost.

The next thing that can help increase the cost-effectiveness of a road trip is keeping accurate and organized records. As far as finances are concerned, keeping fuel, refreshment, and food receipts along with mileage records can keep you on track with the budget you have laid out for your trip. These records can make you more aware of what you are spending and help keep you from over-extending yourself financially.

Other records besides financial are of importance to you and your family regarding your jaunt; they are of sentimental value. Some good advice is to take photos, video, keep a journal of what your experiences were on the road. This will help you to remember your trip years down the road when all the details may have become fuzzy. Take record of souvenirs you purchase recording when and where you purchased them, and how much you paid. This will help you connect the mental puzzle pieces of your memory regarding your vacation.

Finally, utilize the tools that are out there for your advantage. Internet websites such as official town websites, and others can help you determine where you want your destination to be. Population, crime rate, and tourist details can provide you with the necessary information for you to decide where you will stop off, stay, and even where you want to eat. Maps are a good way to find your path, but I recommend a decent GPS system for your automobile. There are many on the market, simply go to your local trusted electronics store and ask about Global Positioning Satellite Systems. These can help you plan trips down to the turn.

Regardless of what you decide with your family trip, these tools and helpful hints can make the difference between having a smooth flawless trip and having a very upsetting, and chaotic trip. A Road Trip is definitely the way to make and keep family memories when done correctly.

Bowflex has got another hit on their hands with the TreadClimber. This American engineered and made piece of exercise equipment will surely inspire you to workout on a regular basis. Maybe even every day!

This is a cool machine. You get results faster than most others because it helps you to build muscle through an aerobic workout. You burn calories while using it and continue to burn them throughout the day because you now have more muscle and a higher metabolism.

A tread climber and a treadmill are similar. On a treadmill, you can walk or even jog on a large flat surface. The only adjustments you can make are in the speed and incline. In contrast, a tread climber has two separate treadmill belts you walk on which raise up and down, much like a stepper. But unlike a stepper, your feet continue to move in a walking motion so you get the best of both. This is much easier on your knees and back. You can also control the speed and incline to increase your heart rate for interval training.

Because of the stepping motion along with walking, you'll burn calories more calories in less time. In fact, twice as many. The low impact motion is perfect if you're looking to protect your joints. Besides getting a stronger heart and lungs, you'll get more energy through the day and sleep better at night.

These machines got a 'Best Buy' rating from Consumer Guide and Consumer Reports stated, "The TreadClimber offers excellent aerobic exercise with less joint impact than you would get on a treadmill."

Bowflex (who manufactures for Nautilus) offers five models ranging in price from $1,599 to $3,399. You can get them on a monthly payment plan from $24 to $50. The most features are obviously found on the highest priced model - the TC6000. They all come with a warranty and a six week money-back guarantee.

Any piece of exercise equipment that gets you excited enough to workout on a regular basis is worth owning. The TreadClimber definitely falls into this category. I feel like jumping on mine right now!

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

Introduction

Text messaging is one of the best features offered by the modern mobile phones. A text message, usually called an SMS (small messaging service), is used to send small message from one mobile phone to other. By using this service, one can send and receive text messages to and from other people all around the world. Text message is usually a lot cheaper than a call but it delivers the message of the sender. There are times when one prefers to send a text message rather than calling to deliver the message. Text messaging is the most easy, convenient and cost effective way to communicate with others using a mobile phone. One can write a sms using the keypad of his mobile phone and send it by entering the recipient's number in the mobile phone. When a sms is received, the mobile phone alerts the user either by ringing some bell or by vibrating or both. The process of sending and receiving sms is very simple. A sms is received instantly after it is sent, which is very convenient.

Sending a Text Message

Sending a text message is quite a simple thing to do, though it can be a little bit tricky for the beginners because of the keypad of the mobile phones. To write a text message, you will have to follow a few steps which are as follows:

•First of all you need to press the menu button of your mobile phone which is present in approximately all the modern mobile phones.

•In the main menu, you will have to scroll and find the sub-menu of messaging.

•Under the messaging menu, write message is usually the first option. Choose that option.

•Another menu will be shown next in which you will have to choose the message type of your message. Usually there are three options: Text Message, Multimedia Message and Email Message. Choose the first option: Text Message.

•Now a blank place will be shown with a cursor blinking in the top left corner of it. You can write your message in that blank field with the help of your mobile phone's keypad. English letters are printed on the keypad to write the text messages along with the numerical digits.

•Since the number of the keys on a cell phone's keypad is less than the total characters in English language, more than one letter are printed on each key. Therefore you may have to press a key more than once to enter a desired character in your messaging field. For example, if you want to enter 'c', you will have to press the '2' key three times.

•When you are done composing your message press send message, you'll be prompted to enter the recipient's phone number. Enter the number and press send.

•Your message is sent.

Receiving a Text Message

Receiving a text message is even simpler than sending one. When a message is received in your mobile device, it alerts you by setting out a beep or tone. All you have to do after that is to hit the read button to read that message. The message contains the name or number of the sender and the original message received. Additional details like time and date of receipt of message can also be viewed by selecting details in the message menu.

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

It's never a good feeling when you are lost on your boat in an unfamiliar lake, yet on occasion even experienced boaters have had that unnerving feeling of losing their navigational way. However, if your boat is equipped with a Marine GPS unit, your chances of returning safely to shore increases exponentially.

It does not matter whether you use a standalone Marine GPS unit, or a handheld unit or have a GPS capable personal data (PDA) finding your bearings can be made much easier. Additionally, God forbid there is an emergency, you can use your marine GPS unit to give rescuers an exact location which would make you safe return to shore pretty much guaranteed and you will also get a quicker response.

When utilizing a handheld Marine GPS unit, it is best to first check the location when you are on the shore and market that down in your unit, in the event you get lost while you are out on the water. You can get to your destination in a quicker, safer, simpler manner by knowing where you are and where you need to go. Particularly if you are in water that you are not familiar with or a quick storm makes visibility nearly impossible. A Marine GPS unit can help you find yourself into a safe harbor in the event that you travel too far away from shore and loose any of your directional bearings that you were hoping you had if you maintained a line of sight.

Marking and Recalling Locations of Successful Fishing Spots

When on the water and your fishing and you come upon a suitable location that gives great results, you cannot put a 'X' on the water, but by utilizing a Marine GPS, you can do the next best thing. You can go back to the precise spot the next time you are looking for a place to catch fish, by marking the location that is revealed by the unit. There will be no judging location by a reference point on the shore and there will be no guessing involved because your Marine GPS unit has the data within it marked.

When boaters sometimes wander away from the territory that they are familiar with they need to send for help. Whether there was a malfunction on their boat or they lost their bearings on the lake and they have a need to guide the rescue craft to their location it becomes more crucial as time goes by. A Marine GPS unit on board can make your imminent rescue easier and faster if you can provide them with the exact location to give to a rescue craft.

In a more severe accident on the water, such as your boat sinking, then a quick rescue is in order. By utilizing a Marine GPS, particularly if equipped with a GPS locator, you can assist rescuers to find you near your last reported location. Having a starting point for a rescue operation can be a life-saving and critical piece of knowledge.

The GPS system is a US military system to provide worldwide positioning information for navigational purposes. The system is maintained for the military by USNO, the United States Naval Observatory. The system is implemented by 24 orbiting satellites, each with precision timing references that are used to triangulate position. With the rise in low-cost GPS navigational equipment, cheap GPS Antennas and Receivers can provide a precise time and frequency reference for computer network synchronisation.

This article presents an introduction to using the GPS system for computer timing applications. It describes the equipment that can be utilised to provide a precise time resource for computers and computer networks.

All of the orbiting satellites have on-board precise timing references that can be utilised by time servers to provide accurate time. Each satellite continually broadcasts accurate time and positioning information. This information can be received by a GPS receiver and externally mounted GPS antenna. The timing information received is referenced to UTC time. The system is a free to air service requiring no set-up or subscription fees.

Many Network Time Protocol (NTP) server systems utilise GPS time as an external timing reference to synchronise Windows, LINUX, UNIX and other operating systems and network infrastructures. GPS is the system of choice as a timing reference since it can provide time to within a few nanoseconds of UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) at a low-cost.

Each GPS satellite transmits a very low-power radio signal at two frequencies; L1 and L2. L1 is the civilian frequency band transmitted at 1575 MHz, while L2 is used for military positioning purposes. The radio signal transmitted by each satellite can easily pass through material such as glass and plastics but are blocked more substantial materials used in buildings. The signals travel by line of sight. The ideal location for a GPS antenna is on a rooftop with a good view of the sky.

The radio signals can be received by a low-cost GPS antenna. The antenna is essentially a high gain amplifier, which is used to amplify and transmit the weak radio signals down a coax cable to a GPS receiver.

The cable length that can be utilised between a GPS antenna and receiver is critical. Cable distance is determined by the relative quality of cable utilised and the gain of the GPS antenna. High antenna gain and high quality coax allows for much longer cable runs.

GPS signal amplifiers can be fitted inline on the coax cable to boost the signal and increase cable length. GPS amplifiers are generally powered from the coax cable. The higher the gain provided by the amplifier, the longer the cable can be extended.

Roof-mounted antennas can be prone to lighting strikes or other voltage surges. A lightning strike up to a quarter of a mile away can damage electronic components. Therefore, it is recommended that a surge suppressor be fitted. Lightning or surge suppressors are installed inline on the GPS cable and redirect any surge to earth. Various types of surge suppressor are available, from gas discharge devices to solid-state multi-strike devices.

GPS receivers decode the signal received from the amplifier and generally make the received information available in a RS232 serial format. Most operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, LINUX and UNIX as well as time server systems can utilise the time output provided by the GPS receiver for accurate synchronisation. Many different GPS protocols are utilised, the most popular being NMEA. The NMEA protocol was developed by the National Marine Electronics Association. The protocol specifies a set of sentences that contain time and positioning information obtained by the GPS receiver. The sentences can be parsed by a PC or time server to obtain accurate time.

To summarise, the GPS system is an excellent source of precise time for NTP server systems or for synchronising stand-alone Windows, LINUX and UNIX PC's. Utilising relatively low-cost equipment the GPS system can be used to synchronise any time critical application.

Truck desks for laptops allow you to instantly have access to client files right on the road back and forth to the office, or on the job site. Today more and more professionals are having to commute and or are working from a home and or a truck mobile office a large portion of the time and we have all experienced this scenario - an important customer calls your cellular, they have sent some files to your email and would like an answer quickly, in almost all cases, you have to delay the response until you get back to the office, this could be an hour.

Laptop Car stands make it easy for you to be able to pull over, open the lap top, connect through your cell phone to the internet, download the file with your email program. Then take a quick look at the customers file and details, answer any questions typing easily with the laptop positioned right where you need it, as most stands are articulating and then send the email. You can easily save a major project from collapse with this technology and combination of products, the laptop, your truck laptop stand, a cellular phone.

Cell phones improve the client communications, now with our reliance on our email as well there is no reason for professionals and business owners not to have both working overtime. Many is the time you or your staff will be making sales calls and need to pull up a business owners past history, with a truck computer desk mount it is a cinch, the laptop is positioned right there beside you, just open it up, look up your client history, go in and make the sales call with memory refreshed, it's much better than trying to work off the console.

Laptop GPS systems have considerably improved our ability to get to an important meeting or presentation. We have all ran short of time trying to find an address and made many trips around the block not quite sure where we were, with a GPS UNIT hooked right to your laptop, open the computer screen, you can easily navigate using the laptop and gps to get to the meeting on time. Most of the Professional quality laptop desk systems allow the screen to remain open, this way you can use a GPS software to assist you in navigating to the client's office.

Laptop car desks are now available with printer stands so you can carry a mobile printer right with you, you perform a quote, enter the details right there on the job site into your laptop, print the quote out on your mobile printer and hand it to the client on the spot, in many cases getting a yes, right there. A note on this particular area, get a mount that is strong enough to hold the printer, if they don't specify that they can hold the printer, don't purchase it, it will only cause hardship. You want a stand that is developed to withstand the additional wieght of the portable printers.

Truck laptop computer desks utilize the floor area to install using self tapping metal screws, however, in most cases there is an option to purchase what's called the no-drill model, or custom designed base. This option allows you to remove the existing seat mounting nuts from your passenger seat, then install this custom designed base, which is made to fit your seat bolt pattern. Be sure to specify this when ordering, this allows you to retighten the nuts, firmly locking your desk base onto the passenger seat bolts making a secure mounting system.

Positioning the notebook desk on top of the custom base and following the manufacturers instructions to assemble the rest of the desk. Manufacturers make it simple and are only a few pieces and take minutes to install. High quality laptop mounting systems allow for variable positioning of the desktop, thus using the laptop is much easier. Be sure to see if the keyboard can be reached from both sides of the vehicle and can used from outside the truck and how long it takes to remove.

Truck center console height brings into question another area you'll need to review to make sure the upright center rod is rugged and heavy enough to handle the flexing when you lift the desk up to rise over it. You will need a desk in some cases to reach up to 27", there are only a limited number that can do this, be sure to ask. What your looking for is the hieght adjustment measurement, or extension length, ask the rep or see if they list it on the information. Again, if it's only ten inches, or even 16", keep looking.

Laptop mounts for trucks, especially the new Ford Super duty desks, or the new Chev Silverado truck all have a new custom mount which turns them into a professional mobile office.

Configuring A Linux Box as a NTP Server

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an Internet protocol designed and developed to synchronise network time clients to an accurate reference clock. NTP defines a number of algorithms and specifies a message structure to pass accurate timing information from a server reference to a client machine. This article describes how to install the freely available public NTP server software distribution available from 'ntp.org'. It shows how to configure NTP to synchronise time with a internet based public time reference.

Internet based NTP time server systems fall into two categories: primary and secondary reference servers. Primary reference servers utilise a highly accurate external timing reference, such as GPS or radio clocks, to provide precise time. Secondart reference servers synchronise their time with primary reference servers and therefore offer slightly reduced accuracy. Primarty reference servers are designated stratum 1, while other servers have a higher stratum, ie 2 or above.

The NTP source code is freely downloadable under the GNU public license from the NTP web site at 'ntp.org'. NTP was originally developed for the LINUX operating system, however, a port to Windows NT is also available. Once the source code has been obtained, it should be installed, compiled and configured on the host computer. This process is automated with the installation and configuration scripts supplied in the distribution. Many Linux based operating systems have the NTP package pre-installed. However, it may be wise to download the most recent version, which is currently 4.2.4.

The NTP daemon is configured via a configuration file 'ntp.conf'. This configuration file may contain a list of public NTP server references that can be used by the host to synchronise time. The 'server' command can be used to specify public NTP time references, characters specified after the # symbol are comments:

server time-a.nist.gov # Public NTP server: NIST, Gaithersburg, Maryland server time-c.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov # Public NTP Server: NIST, Boulder, Colorado

When the configuration file is complete the NTP daemon can be started using the 'ntpd start' script. Other scripts are vailable that can be used to control the daemon: 'ntpd stop', 'ntpd restart'. There is also a query script available that shows the current synchronisation status of the daemon: 'ntpq -p'.

The 'restrict' command can be used to control access premissions to the NTP server. There are a number of permutations or the 'restrict' command; a few examples are listed below.

restrict default ignore #Restrict all access to the time server restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap # Only allow local computers access

Multiple commands can be specified to restrict or disallow access to a range of computers.

NTP provides an additional level of security by utilising authentication codes. This is a mechanism where matching key codes can be specified on a client and server which are encrypted and passed between the server and client. This provides a client with the ability to authenticate the source of a time reference. Authentication keys are configured in the 'ntp.keys' file. They are specified using a key reference, encryption code and authentication key. Additionally, trusted authentication keys can be specified using the 'trusted key' command is the 'ntpd.conf' configuration file.

Technology has contributed a lot and is still contributing much to make our lives simple. It has eased communication to such an extent that we can be mobile and still stay in touch with each other. It is not only communication that is eased but a lot of other things which are more suitable to the changing needs of the fast paced individuals. One such change is in the way one used to find the directions. Gone are the days when maps and compass were used to find directions. Although such techniques were useful but not accurate as the new age GPS system, which is the most accurate way of finding directions using a digital map. GPS or the Global Positioning System works with the help of satellites orbiting the earth and allows you to use it in many applications other than finding directions.

Although GPS is used with many applications, it has found an all new dimension when used with the wrist watch. Yes! A GPS device included in your wristwatch is not a dream but reality. With the wide use of GPS technology many tech savvy companies have tried and developed a wrist watch which is equipped with GPS. Now there are many companies which offer you a wrist watch with GPS technology. The GPS wrist watches are meant for sportspersons and adventure buffs who want to spend more time in the open. This GPS watch is an expert navigator which can keep anyone on track in the mountains, forests, rivers or lakes without getting lost.

The GPS wrist watches are more or less like wrist computers and do have more than one set of functions. The only thing which you need to understand in the GPS wrist watches is the limited size of the screen and restricted number of keys mean which means that the device must have different modes for displaying sufficient information on each topic on the screen. The downside of such small screen is that you have to change modes al lot during complex operations. For example, if you want to access GPS and you happen to have the altitude mode on, you have to apply a fairly long sequence of keystrokes to go through the menu system. Some of the GPS watches do have as many as five different modes, which are time, altimeter/barometer, compass, GPS navigation and activity mode for measuring speed and distance.

The GPS watches are quite essential if you are planning an outdoor adventure. They are best to guide you to the location which you want to reach. They are also beneficial for trekking and mountaineering with the altimeter feature which keeps you updated on the height. Some of the latest GPS watches also have an Activity mode, which shows you the speed, distance traveled, time from start and other values. Your trail is recorded in the device memory and this information can later be used for the Track Back function, or viewing the route at home via a PC.

Understanding Cell Phone Frequency Bands

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

Perhaps you're a businessman who needs to stay in touch with you're clients even if you're traveling from one side of the world to another or maybe you're just someone who wants to be updated of all the news and hips around. So, you're looking for a perfect phone that suite your needs, are you not? But what type of frequency band will you consider?

In the US, GSM services use two frequency bands while there are also two different frequency bands that were used by them elsewhere in the world. Considering this dilemma, some of the notable mobile phone manufacturers like Nokia, Siemens, Ericsson and Motorola developed a phone that can work on all four frequency bands commonly called as quad-band phones.

So what about this frequency band? Let us try to understand more about it.

Cellular phones use radio waves to transmit conversations. These radio waves can be at different frequencies. Consider this interesting record of different frequencies used by different types of radio services.

GSM cell phones use frequencies within four different frequency bands.

•850 MHz (824.2 - 848.8 MHz Tx; 869.2 - 893.8 MHz Rx)

•900 MHz (880-2 - 914.8 MHz Tx; 925.2 - 959.8 MHz Rx)

•1800 MHz (1710.2 - 1784.8 MHz Tx; 1805.2 - 1879.8 MHz Rx)

•1900 MHz (1850.2 - 1909.8 MHz Tx; 1930.2 - 1989.8 MHz Rx)

Although 850 and 900, 1800 and 1900 are seemingly close figures, a phone that works in one frequency band unfortunately can not work in the frequency band next to it unless added as a specific extra frequency band. To contrast, when you have your FM radio tuned to a radio station at 98.1 MHz, you can obviously never hear what is happening on another radio station at 98.3 MHz unless you retune your radio. You got it? This is actually how the phone frequency band works.

Formerly, the US only used 1900 MHz for its GSM cell phone service. But in the passing years, there has been a growing amount of GSM service on the 850 MHz band simply because this type of service is usually been used in rural areas, since it has better range than the 1900 MHz band. However, it was also been used in city areas especially when the cell phone company has spare frequencies unused in the 850 MHz band and no remaining frequencies to use in the 1900 MHz band.

On the other hand, when the US started to use GSM, a few other countries with very close links to the US chose to copy the US and use the same frequencies that US used. In fact, almost without exception, all international countries that use the non-US international frequency bands have 900 MHz service.

So which frequencies are needed when traveling internationally?

If you intend to use your phone only internationally, you need to decide if you'll be using the phone in countries that use the international frequencies or in countries that use the US frequencies, or in both. Nevertheless, in all common bands, 900 MHz was used internationally and the 1800 MHz will only give expanded coverage in countries that also have 900 MHz.

However, if you intend to use your phone only in the US, you just need to get a dual band phone that has both 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. A single band phone with only 1900 MHz will give almost as good coverage anyway.

Summing up, if you intend to use your phone in both the US and internationally the best solution is to get a quad-band phone that will work on four bands which is the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz bands.

Camera Phone And Police Brutality

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

If in the past year's camera phones were just use for capturing funny and charming events. Today, it became a powerful community tool in the debate about police conduct and crime resolution.

Some Los Angeles political groups are starting to train citizens to use cameras, video cell phones and Internet sites like YouTube, Metacafe, Myspace and the like to get their voices and pictures heard like never before.

According to Sherman Austin, founder of Cop Watch L.A, they encourage everyone to have a camera on them at all times so if anything happens it can be documented. The concept of patrolling the police is something that they are trying to press on as a form of direct action.

Moreover, three videos shot on cell phones captured Los Angeles police officers using excessive force to hold down black motorist Rodney King. The video images were captured by an Argentine plumber which brings up evidence that Rodney King was indeed beaten by four police officers. All said three videos came out within the same week.

For about 15 years later there are video cameras in tens of millions of cellular phones that people are carrying all day makes the documentation of almost any public event easy to perform. As a result, Black and Latino activists in tough Los Angeles neighborhoods are leaving nothing to risk.

Furthermore, Austin added "We have tried civilian review boards, we have tried going to City Hall and going to the police and all we have seen is more brutality, technology makes it all the easier now". There are lots of digital cameras available nowadays that is already capable of taking good photos in daylight and then there's also an Internet that could get your photos out there anytime, anywhere.

L.A. Police Chief William Bratton added that he is investigating officer conduct from the three cell phone videos that is just recently captured, but warned against quick conclusions that he cannot just make judgments based solely on videos or portions of videos.

Moreover, Bratton also stressed that there is no U.S. government agency that has more policies, procedures, guidelines and independent oversight when it comes to use of force than the LAPD. However, Executive director of the Southern California chapter of the ACLU Ramona Ripston stated that these latest incidents underline the case for more citizen oversight.

On the other hand, CNN launch a report regarding 15-year-old boy that used his Sprint cell phone camera to take pictures of a man who allegedly tried to lure him into his car. Such pictures lead to the man's arrest.

The said boy, who escaped from his alleged captor after a struggle, gave the pictures of the man and his car license plate to police in Clifton, New Jersey, after the incident. Thus, armed with that evidence, police officers arrested the suspect William MacDonald.

Moreover after the incident, a spokeswoman from Sprint, the manufacturer of the phone, says the incident is the first time as far as the company knows. "Someone has used the year-old technology to foil a criminal" she added.

Atomic clocks are utilised to provide a highly precise timing reference. Many types of clock use the generic term 'atomic'. Most atomic clocks are very expensive systems generally only found in National Physics Laboratories. Most commercial precise timing references are based on National time and frequency radio or GPS time. Utilising a radio or GPS time source makes available a highly accurate reference of time without the expense and complexity of a true atomic clock.

This article discusses a number of atomic timing references and how they can be used to provide synchronisation of computer equipment and networks.

National Radio time and frequency broadcasts transmit accurate time and date information from a radio transmitter. A number of radio time and frequency broadcasts are available, such as: WWVB, DCF-77 and MSF-60. The time and frequency radio transmissions are referenced to a precise atomic clock time source. By utilising a relatively low-cost radio receiver PC and NTP server systems have access to precise timing information. Additionally, radio antennas can generally obtain a good signal indoors close to the host time server making installation very straight-forward. However, radio broadcasts have a finite range and are generally only available to a regional audience.

The DCF77 time broadcast is generated from from Frankfurt, Central Germany. The radio broadcast is a long-wave radio transmission at 77.5 kHz. The transmitters are maintained by T-Systems, a division of Deuche Telecom. The time and frequency broadcast is referenced to precise atomic clocks located at the German National Standards Laboratory (PTB) in Brunswick. The DCF-77 signal can be received using a low-cost radio receiver and when decoded provides a precise timing reference for computer time servers.

The MSF-60 radio time broadcast is transmitted from Anthorn in the North of England. The signal is broadcast as a long-wave radio transmission at 60 kHz. The transmitted time and date information is referenced to atomic clocks sited at the UK National Physics Laboratory. The transmitters are maintained by VT Communications.

WWVB is the US National Time and Frequency radio broadcast. It is a 60 kHz transmission broadcast from Fort Collins, Colorado. The transmission is referenced to atomic clocks installed at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). WWVB has been in continuous operation since 1962 and provides a timing reference with accuracy better than 100 usecs.

The GPS system is a Global Positioning System intended for worldwide navigation. The GPS system consists of 24 satellites in high orbit. By utilising triangulation, the GPS system can provide highly accurate positioning information anywhere on Earth. In order to calculate position, each orbiting satellite has an on-board atomic clock timing reference. Atomic time is constantly transmitted from each satellite and is available to a GPS receiver. The GPS signal is available subscription-free anywhere on the face of the Earth. By utilising a low-cost GPS antenna and receiver accurate timing information can be made available to NTP server and computer time synchronisation systems. A GPS antenna does however need to be installed ideally on a rooftop with a good 360-degree view of the sky.

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is the standard means of achieving network time synchronisation. NTP is used to distribute accurate time around the Internet and other computer networks. The standard NTP server distribution for LINUX\UNIX is available free-of-charge under the GNU public licence and provides reference clock drivers for many radio and GPS receivers. Radio and GPS receivers are available with serial or USB ports that can interface to a PC or NTP time server to provide an accurate external timing reference. Depending on time source, NTP servers can synchronise to within a few microseconds of the correct time. Depending on network traffic they can synchronise network time clients to within a few milliseconds.

To summarise, there are a number of national and global time and frequency references available for synchronising computers and computer networks. Many time sources provide a highly accurate time reference that can provide synchronisation to within a fraction of the correct time. By utilising radio and GPS references, accurate time is available without the expense and complexity of atomic clocks.

D. Evans is a highly experienced technical author who specialises in time server and atomic clock time synchronisation systems to ensure accurate network time. Click here to find out more about atomic clock and GPS NTP server systems.

Ahhh once again you can feel the wind in your hair, the world at your fingertips, and ironically, the same statistical probability of death or loss of limb as when you were driving that old motorcycle of yours back in the 90's! Oops.

Sorry for the scare. The truth is that aviation safety is easy when you follow the guidelines and stay smart. The way for a pilot to insure the safety of him or herself and those on board is to follow the normal safety precautions and to use common sense before flying a plane.

4 important tips:

*Don't run out of fuel

*Avoid bad weather conditions at all costs

*Don't make bad decisions / don't be risky

*Pay attention to proper plane maintenance techniques to avoid mechanical error

Running out of fuel is never a good thing, but it is easily preventable. In early 2006, a small plane had to be guided on an emergency landing on a major freeway in California. Luckily, the landing went extraordinarily perfect and the pilot and passenger were both unharmed. Clearly this is very rare but the situation would've been avoidable if the pilot had taken the obvious precaution of coordinating the amount of fuel in his plane with the amount of fuel needed for the trip he was taking. Things like these seem so trivial when compared to other responsibilities of a pilot, but sometimes it's the small things that are easy to miss.

Bad weather conditions are less foreseeable than knowing that you're about to run out of fuel. That's right - flying headstrong into the skies over a blizzard in Buffalo is probably not the best idea for you, my friend! Storms of all types have the capability of preventing pilots from maneuvering the plane the way they were trained to. Essentially, poor weather conditions can lead to such inability to fly a plane that would cause a passenger to believe the plane they were in was being piloted by a first-timer. Experienced pilots and crew can oftentimes find themselves in a tricky situation when entering treacherous weather in order to reach a destination. It is a hard decision to make but pilots of small planes should always err of the safer side.

Nevertheless, there will always be pilots young or old who overestimate their capabilities while in the sky. Risky flight habits are not common amongst the flying industry, and hopefully it stays that way. When making decisions as a pilot of a small plane, one must keep in mind the fact that they are not only dealing with the risk of their own life, but also that they are passing a judgment that will have an effect on the lives and futures of the crew, passengers, or cargo on board. In addition, planes are not cheap toys; the rental fees alone will run you thousands of dollars per year, and repair costs are hefty. You don't want to run the risk of damaging the plane that you're in.

Proper airplane maintenance is probably the most important way to insure your safety in the air. It's not always a one-man job; in fact, there is an entire school built solely around the teaching of aviation maintenance and repair. The bottom line is knowing who is taking care of the plane that you are flying, and making sure that all standards have been met before taking off.

Control of your plane is literally at your fingertips, but this control can easily be taken away in an instant if the regulations have not been met, precautions have not been taken, or if the risk has not been properly evaluated before the flight. So, congrats pilot! Be smart, be careful, and fly safely.

Time Synchronisation On Your Computer

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

PC's keep time, even when the computer is turned off, using battery-backed real time clock (RTC) chips. The RTC chips are mass-produced low-cost components that generally do not have good time keeping properties and have a tendency to drift. This article discusses a number of ways to maintain accurate time on a PC. It also provides information on how to synchronise a PC's time with precise Internet and national time and frequency radio transmissions.

Computer systems time can drift anything from a few seconds a day to a few minutes each day. When processing transactions or performing time critical tasks across a number of computers, incorrect time can be a real headache.

The Internet found and solved this problem a number of years ago by developing the Network Time Protocol. NTP can be used to distribute accurate time from a highly precise time server to network time clients. Most modern operating systems have the ability to synchronise time with a NTP server. Generally, all that is required is the IP address or domain name of Stratum 1 or Stratum 2 NTP servers.

LINUX and UNIX operating systems can download the full NTP implementation from the NTP web site 'ntp.org'. NTP is freely available open source software available under the GNU public licence.

Microsoft Windows XP/2000/2003 and Vista operating systems have an integrated SNTP client. SNTP stands for Simple Network Time Protocol. SNTP is a sub-set of the Network Time Protocol. SNTP provides a simplified NTP algorithm with many of the complex routines to acheive high precision removed. Windows operating systems allow an IP address or domain name of a Internet or Intranet NTP server to be entered in the time properties tab. The SNTP client will then periodically contact the NTP server in order to update and synchronise system time.

A problem arises, however, if the computer does not have access to the Internet or is not networked. What is required is local access to an accurate time reference. However, there are many freely available time and frequency resources that can be utilsied.

A number of national radio time references are transmitted free-to-air. These radio broadcasts are generally referred to by their 'call sign'. WWVB is the North-American time and frequency radio transmission, broadcast for Colorado in the States. DCF is the call-sign of the German radio time transmission, which is broadcast from Meinflingen near Frankfurt. MSF is the UK time and frequency transmission, broadcast for Anthorn, Cumbria. A number of other broadcasts are available in France, Canada, Switzerland and Japan. USB and serial radio receivers are available that can receive radio time broadcasts and provide computers with accurate timing information. The PC system time can then be synchronised to the received time and frequency radio source.

The problem with national radio time broadcasts is that they inherantly have a finite transmission range. Their transmissions are generally regional and limited to national boundaries. The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides a solution to this. The GPS system operates from a number of orbiting satellites. Each satellite has an on-board highly accurate synchronised atomic clock. GPS can provide highly precise timing information anywhere on the face of the planet. All that is required to receive the GPS transmissions is a low-cost GPS receiver and antenna. The GPS antenna needs to be shown a good clear view of the sky for correct operation. By connecting a PC to a serial or USB GPS receiver, accurate timing information is continuously available.

To summarise, a wide range of highly accurate computer timing references are freely available. Utilising the Internet, National time and frequency radio transmissions or the GPS system can ensure that a computers time remains locked to a precise time reference.

Alex Mashinky Press Release

Posted by Wealth Group | 6:51 PM | 0 comments »

June 29, 2007—Meet Alex Mashinsky. He is an entrepreneur, an inventor, and most recently, CEO of LimoR Prior to the limo business, Mashinsky founded Arbinet thexchange, world leader in providing wireless, wire line and VOIP connectivity. When asked why he ventured from telecommunications into an on-line limo reservations business, Mashinsky said, "The internet is just in the first inning of transforming industries. This one has been resistant to change."

"Today, almost everything can be done on-line. Seventy percent of travel is done online but that has not been the case for limo services." Thus, Mashinsky saw something that was truly missing from the market.

As an unsatisfied customer himself, like many other New Yorkers, Mashinsky created a new type of limo service. It consists of an easy-to-use website in which customers can make instant reservations, setup personal and corporate accounts, learn about the company, and have the opportunity to chat with a live representative. The site has everything, including domestic and international rates, detailed bookings, tracking, and billing systems.

Yet most exceptional is that all the cars have GPS which enables customers to track each job and find the location of their car on-line. They may also retroactively find the route and times for each job and match it to their bills. When referring to the website, Mashinsky affirmed, "We are light years ahead of anyone else in the industry and our technology is consistently improving so that we are always on top. We believe in transparency and fairness which results in almost no loss of clients."

When Mashinsky looked for investors in his new venture, he met 200 investors who declined. Out of 12 million dollars invested to date, Alex has contributed half. When you look at LimoR numbers, you can see why Mashinsky decided to take his capital and invest it in this company. Since its modest launch in 2003, LimoR had jumped to 15.5 million dollars in revenue in 2006. And Mashinsky is not stopping there! He expects the company to make a two million dollar profit on 20 million dollars in revenue in 2007. His goal is to make it a billion dollar company. With a proven record, he will certainly do it.

Securing a NTP Time Server Installation

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

The Network Time Protocol was originally developed to ensure the synchronisation of time-critical process across the Internet. It is one of the oldest Internet protocols still in use today. NTP is used by network time clients to ensure synchronised time is distributed throughout a network. This article discusses the Network Time Protocol's security features and how they are implemented on various network devices. It describes how to configure MD5 authentication keys on Linux machines and CISCO network devices.

The Network Time Protocol may be used to synchronise many time critical processes on distributed computers across a network. The NTP protocol is therefore a potential security risk. Hackers or malicious users could attempt to disrupt system synchronisation by attempting to modify or replicate NTP time stamps.

Luckily, NTP has an integral security feature to thwart attempts to tamper with system time synchronisation. NTP can use MD5 encrypted keys to authenticate time stamps received from a time server. The time client can utilise keys to ensure that a time stamp has indeed been received from a secure source.

NTP implements authentication by utilising an agreed set of keys between a server and client that are encrypted in time stamps. A NTP time server passes a timestamp to a client with one of a selection of keys encrypted and appended to the message. When a timestamp is received by the client, the security key is un-encrypted and checked against the list of stored secure keys. In this manner the client can ensure that the received timestamp originated from the expected time source.

The Network Time Protocol utilises MD5 (Message Digest Encryption 5) encrypted keys. MD5 is a widely used secure encryption algorithm that utilises a 128-bit cryptographic hash function. The algorithm outputs a fingerprint of the supplied key, which is appended to the timestamp.

UNIX and LINUX NTP installations store secure keys in a file named 'ntp.keys'. Every line in the file provides a secure key in the format: 'key-number' 'encryption-code' 'key'. The 'key-number' is a reference to the key. The 'encryption code' describes the encryption algorithm in use, usually 'M' for MD5 encryption. The 'key' field is the agreed key that is to be encrypted by the encryption algorithm. A subset of 'trusted keys' may be specified in the NTP configuration file 'ntp.conf'. This allows a reduced subset of keys to be utilised by the server. Allowing compromised keys to be easily excluded from use. Trusted keys are specified using the 'trusted-keys' command followed by a space-delimited list of key references.

Many CISCO routers utilise secure MD5 authentication in the installed implementation of NTP. To enable a Cisco router to perform MD5 authentication you must follow a number of steps. Firstly, NTP authentication needs to be enabled using the 'ntp authenticate' command. Secondly, define an NTP authentication key using the 'ntp authentication-key' command. A unique reference number identifies each NTP key. The key reference number is supplied as the first paramater to the 'ntp authentication-key' command. Thirdly, use the 'ntp trusted-key' command to tell the router which keys are valid. The command's only argument is the reference number of the key defined in the previous step

The Windows 2000\2003\XP operating systems adopt a SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) application for time synchronisation. The implementation used by Microsoft does not include authentication keys.

Essentially, secure key authentication is a method used to erradicate the possibility of the interception of timestamps for malicous purposes. Network time clients can be sure that timestamps have indeed emanated from the expected time reference and have not been intercepted for malicious purposes.

NTP Server Backup Timing References

Posted by Wealth Group | 2:51 AM | 0 comments »

The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is a standard Internet protocol for the transfer of time around a computer network. NTP was originally developed to synchronise time on Internet time clients. The protocol has a hierarchical structure, each level of the structure serves time to the level below. At the top of the hierarchy is a stratum-1 network time server that synchronises to an external time & frequency source, such as GPS.

NTP Servers utilise the Network Time Protocol (NTP) to provide an accurate timing reference to network time clients. Stratum 1 NTP servers synchronise to highly accurate external reference clocks such as GPS or Radio Time & Frequency transmissions.

Many NTP servers utilise a high precision backup frequency generator to maintain time in the event of signal loss. This article describes the various precision frequency generators used by NTP servers and the price-performance issues.

Oscillator stability is inherently defined by their quality factor known as their Q factor. The Q factor of an oscillator is calculated by dividing its resonance frequency by its resonance width. The higher the Q factor the more stable the oscillator. Therefore, NTP servers are best served with backup oscillators with a high Q factor.

The most common form of oscillator is a quartz crystal oscillator. More than 2,000,000 quartz crystal oscillators are manufactured each year. Quartz crystal oscillators are used in all manner of timing equipment from clocks and watches to computer systems. Quartz crystal oscillators have a quality factor in the range 10^4. Environmental factors, such as temperature, can affect the resonance of quartz crystal oscillators. However, a number of techniques have been developed to minimise external environmental effects on the crystal.

Temperature controlled crystal oscillators (TCXO) contain a sensor that adjusts the frequency of the oscillator to compensate for the effects of temperature on the crystal. TCXO's provide an increase in the stability of the crystal by a factor of 2 or 3. Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillators (OCXO) utilise a technique designed to minimise temperature fluctuations that affect the resonance of a quartz crystal oscillator. The quartz crystal is encased in an insulated enclosure along with a small heating element and a temperature sensor. Combined, the heating element and sensor maintain the internal temperature of the crystal well above the ambient temperature. Maintaining a constant temperature can increase the stability of the crystal by a factor of 10 or more. Typically, TCXO and OCXO devices have a quality factor (Q) in the range 10^6. Recent advances in TCXO manufacturing processes have dramatically improved size, performance and cost. TCXO's are now an attractive proposition for even cost-sensitive applications.

Rubidium based oscillators operate at the resonance frequency of the Rubidium atom, 6.834,682,612 GHz. Rubidium based oscillators are relatively expensive, but have a much higher stability than crystal oscillators. However, manufacturing and design advances mean Rubidium Oscillators are constantly becoming smaller and less expensive. Rubidium based NTP servers can provide a highly stable timing reference but are still relatively expensive. To summarise, NTP servers with oscillators that have a higher Q factor provide a more stable timing reference. However, stability often comes at a cost and a compromise between price and performance may need to be sought.

A golfer's most challenging aspect of the game is judging the distances of various parts of the golf course. In addition to the importance of knowing how far you are from the hole, it is also important to know the distances of different parts of a fairway are as well as managing your game effectively. A golf GPS unit can give you an advantage in in this regard.

For instance, if you are standing in the middle of a fairway, you may see a marker that tells you you are 150 yards to the middle of the green. However, if there is a water hazard in front of the green, it will help to know how far you have to hit the ball to at least clear the lake or how far it is to the front of the lake to keep your ball from getting wet. With a gold GPS unit that contains that particular course information you are able to better determine which club to use under which circumstance.

Naturally, a golf GPS unit will only be of use if a golfer is any good at the game. Knowing you are standing 136.2 yards from the center of the green will not help you hit the ball straight or keep it from flying into the water or sand trap on either side of the green. However, a golf GPS unit can help you find out how far into the woods your ball penetrated.

Practically Any Golf Course You Can Imagine Is at Your Fingertips

The majority of the time, you can hook your golf GPS unit into your computer and by signing up with a service you can download just about every golf course in the country, making available to you as many golf course maps as your golf GPS system will hold at any one time. So when you are on the course playing one of your games, you can take out your golf GPS unit and have all the information about the course you are on available to you in an instant.

Maybe you are on the green that has a hard dogleg, and your hoping not to over drive the corner and make it more difficult to hit next shot towards the green. By using your golf GPS unit, you will be able to closely estimate which club to use off the tee to get your ball to the middle of the fairway or to either side, which will give you the best possible vantage point for your next stroke.

Instead of having a professional golfers walk the course before a professional match begins, making calculations and notes on numerous distances for them to use during a match, many professional golfers have begun to take advantage of the information provided from their golf GPS unit to stay on top of their position.

Biggest Choice You Must Often Make...Affiliate or Full Product Ownership?

There exists today many online marketers that are earning a lot of money strictly selling other people's products as an affiliate. They do not ever actually own these info products in any way. Instead, they just send targeted traffic to a website and earn a commission for each product or service sold. We will explore each option here and evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of each choice.

What are the pluses and minuses of launching an Internet marketing career as an affiliate versus a product owner? Being just an affiliate, you need not be involved in the long creation process, or the many other costs involved in product ownship such as list- buliding, merchant services, etc.

However, a major disadvantage is that you aren't in control of the product itself. You have to search the web to see if there's a product you feel sure of promoting. You can do this through ClickBank and other third party affiliate networks, but you're always going head to head with competing affiliates for a share of the Internet Marketing treasure.

Serving as an affiliate, you may not control the sales copy or added bonus items. Should the product owner fall down on providing quality customer service, it can really hurt the affiliate marketer too, long term in his hard earned, valued reputation.

As a product owner, you're locked into the entire process from start to the end. You have to develop a unique concept, create a product or pay to have it created using an outsourcing service, and then get everything up and running smoothly, if you want your cyber marketing venture to be a success.

You also have to recruit a larger group of affiliates and provide an ample toolbox filled with strategies they can use to help promote your site. But you retain control over the details of each site and can test and tweak sales copy for higher conversions and deliver any sort of product or bonus that you feel is worthy to your customers.

Is one individual choice better than the other for the cyber marketer who is considering all of their options? They each have their positive qualities and their negatives. Of course, the really big one is the higher profit percentage the owner may enjoy over the affiliate marketer working on only a commission basis

Actually in practice, most marketers do a combination of actions of here. They'll create their own information product in the form of an Ebook and then hyperlink recommendations back to affiliate products that they promote. It can work so many times in a great many cases. There are several ways to have the best of both worlds and experienced IM people can often point you in the right direction to accomplish just this in your own marketing endeavors.

This usually hikes the proft percentage of the created product and makes more passive money each time the product is advertised by the affiliate invloved. So many are now finding, the magic is in the proper mix of these two important cyber options.

Every parent worries about their children and most every child will disobey their parents at some point and time. In some instances this may not be a big deal, but in others it could put your child in danger. This is why a child GPS device for safety is a good idea. It could mean the difference in knowing that your child is in a dangerous place in time to aid, instead of when it's to late. This could make a big difference in the safety of your child. You won't have to wonder where you they are anymore; you will have a way of knowing for sure.

Has you child ever not came home right after school? This creates a since of panic in a parent that you have to experience to understand. With a child GPS device for safety you can find out where your child is immediately. You will know if they stopped at the neighbor's house before coming in or if they are somewhere they shouldn't be. Small children have a tendency of seeing something they like and taking off after it. This could be very dangerous. A tracking device can help out if this happens. It can even help you find a child that has wondered away from you in a crowded facility.

A child GPS device for safety can be a great access for teenagers as well although, they may disagree with this. You can put one of these devices in your child's car to aid monitor where they are at all times. You will know if they are at the friends house you said they are visit or across town at a hangout point. Of course, these devices cannot keep your child secure while out on the road they can help you make sure they are staying in areas that you feel are the safest. Some of these devices can be set to go off automatically if your child exits the safety zone that you have programmed it to. Newer models can monitor the blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate of your child

Your teenager may not be the only person that feels like these child GPS devices for safety may be a little extravagant. There are a lot of parents that disagree with these devices. They feel like they can trust their child and that everyone should just give them a chance. This may be true for many children, but you have to take into consideration peer pressure and the fact that a teen can get pushed into things that they prefer not to do. If their friends know that you are keeping track of where they go, they want be pressuring them to go places they shouldn't. Still this is a personal decision that every parent will need to make when they are considering their child's safety.

Are you among the many families asking themselves the same question--where should we go on vacation?

How about Seattle's world-famous Space Needle, Napa Valley's wine country or New York's Empire State Building? All are worthy destinations, but what's the quickest route? How do you avoid the New Jersey Turnpike in rush-hour traffic? Take the Golden Gate or Bay Bridge to Napa? Is Seattle's Pike Place Market near the Space Needle?

With about two-thirds of travelers driving to their destinations in the family car, the need for pin-point accurate directions and real-time traffic updates from a portable GPS navigator is moving into the mainstream, experts say.

According to research firm Canalys, an estimated 2.9 million portable GPS navigators were sold in the past year. And while the units can't squeeze any more miles per gallon from your car's engine, they can guide you on the most direct--and the most fuel-efficient--route to any address in the U.S. and Canada from wherever you are.

What used to be a niche market, with specialized developers producing complex products, is now wide open, with well-known consumer electronics companies and even computer manufacturers jumping into the fray. U.S. retailers saw more than 3 million portable GPS navigators sold in 2006, making it one of the fastest-growing consumer technology segments, with year-over-year unit sales expanding over 250 percent during the most recent holiday season.

"The portable navigation market is experiencing unprecedented growth," said Allan Jason, marketing vice president for LG Electronics USA, Inc., one of the leading major consumer electronics companies now offering portable GPS navigators. "Increased competition is leading to more aggressive pricing as well as better-designed products that are easier to use, making the consumer the ultimate benefactor."

Now, GPS navigators offer turn-by-turn voice guidance with street name announcements ("In 100 yards, turn left on Maple Street") so drivers can keep their focus on the road ahead rather than on a GPS screen. Built-in directories of points-of-interest (POIs) are also growing exponentially, offering access to a wider selection of travel destinations, restaurants and other entertainment hotspots at the simple touch of an on-screen button. A new breed of local experts--wherever they may find themselves--is being created across the North American continent.

The newest portable navigators are also featuring larger and more brilliant displays, better designs and easier access to real-time traffic information. For example, models from LG's portable navigator line combine a slim, compact design that allows simple installation and a touch-screen menu featuring easy-to-read 3D maps and large icons. These simple-to-use devices feature touch-screen LCDs, turn-by-turn voice guidance and superslim cases for enhanced portability.

For millions of vacationers jumping on the portable GPS bandwagon this year, getting around has never been easier, more economical and more fun. To learn more, visit

NTP Time Server Misuse and Abuse

Posted by Wealth Group | 10:51 AM | 0 comments »

The Network Time Protocol is a standard protocol for the dissemination of time around a computer network. NTP was originally developed to synchronise Internet time clients. The protocol has a hierarchical structure, each level of the structure, or stratum, serves time to the level below. At the top of the protocol structure is a stratum-one network time server that synchronises to an external frequency source, such as GPS. There are a host of stratum 1 NTP time servers residing on the Internet for synchronising network time clients.

There have been a number of reported problems of network time server misuse or abuse. This article discusses some of the reported NTP time server abuse incidents and describes NTP configuration methods that can reduce such problems. Most incidents seem to have occurred due to manufacturer configuration issues rather than malicious intent.

Many NTP server misuse issues have arisen from client configuration errors, particularly in consumer electronic equipment. Due to the volume of consumer electronic equipment manufactured and in-use, any configuration issues with equipment that access NTP time servers can greatly magnify problems. Typically, clients with configuration errors or firmware bugs that cause repeated access to a network time server can cause server loading problems when a large number of clients are involved.

A recent high-profile incident of consumer electronic equipment causing NTP server problems was with consumer router equipment. Home router devices were accessing stratum 1 Internet time servers and flooding them with requests for time. Many NTP time server administrators noticed a large increase in traffic and server loading. Many stratum 1 NTP servers have an access policy that forbids anything other than a stratum 2 server from requesting time. Home router equipment should not therefore directly access a stratum 1 time server.

In a separately reported network time server misuse case, an Internet based NTP server was being bombarded by ever-increasing volumes of traffic. It was initially thought that this was due to an attack on the server. However, the amount of traffic continued to rise over time rather than decrease. It was eventually found that home router equipment manufactured by a large manufacturer had hard coded the NTP servers IP address in the products firmware. Each router in operation was contacting the server at regular intervals in an attempt to synchronise time. The volume of devices in operation eventually overloaded the server.

The NTP protocol implements a rather general-purpose address mask restricted use policy. This allows only IP addresses within a specified range or that fit a specified address mask access to a NTP time server. Alternatively, clients can be excluded from access by explicitly including them in a restriction list. Rogue clients can therefore be excluded access to the NTP server by explicitly restricting access.

Usually, the server drops NTP requests that are denied access. However, occasionally a harsher response is required. The time server can explicitly tell the client to stop sending with a special message. A 'kiss-o-death' packet has been created especially for this purpose. Kiss of death (kod) codes can provide an intelligent time client with useful synchronisation information. The character string codes are designed for easy viewing in log files and convey denial of service messages. When a client receives a 'kiss-o-death' packet, it should stop sending to a particular server and locate an alternative server, if available. If an altenative is unavailable, the time client should only re-contact the time server after an exponentially increasing time.

Step outside your own front door and in all likelihood Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have impacted on your daily life in some way. It could be that rush hour taxi ride across town or perhaps that weekend fishing trip. Originally developed by the US military, GPS tracking systems have a wide array of practical uses for the consumer. In general terms its two main functions are positioning – instantly locating a person or object and navigation. That may be fine for a police manhunt or a round the world yachtsman, so what can GPS do for the average consumer?

This technology can offer enhanced reassurance for worried parents. Do you really know where your teenage son or daughter goes at night? Perhaps a GPS tracking system device can help ease parental anxiety. There are units available that can specify a certain locality to monitor, so if your child strays outside this area an alert will be sent to your device. He or she will then be tracked for the remainder of their journey continually relaying data back to your device or the Internet. These units can take the form of hand held equipment, a mobile phone or a watch. There are even tiny pet tracking receivers available on the market for use on a dog collar.

The leisure industry has long since adopted GPS tracking system technology for use in outdoor pursuits. For hiking, mountaineering and deep sea fishing there are specialist devices available offering tailored functionality. A diver can safely assess how long he or she can remain at a certain depth while heart rate and blood pressure is being monitored.

In car units have become the most widely used of GPS devices as the plain old road map becomes consigned to history. Drivers have the capability to plot complicated itineraries down to the minutest detail. Cost and time savings can be made as congestion black spots and uneven terrain can be avoided with ease. Most importantly emergency services can accurately pinpoint the location of a vehicle instantly when involved in breakdown or accident. In fact a GPS tracking system can actually save you money. Most insurance companies reduce insurance premiums for vehicles with tracking capabilities. Business has also recognized the cost savings and increased efficiency that GPS provides which is often used to track and monitor individuals as well as vehicles.

Consider carefully your reason for purchasing a GPS tracking device and its usefulness to yourself, your family or business. This sophisticated piece of hardware is by no means a substitute for plain common sense. Life's risks and hazards still exist out there. What it can provide is a heightened sense of wellbeing and security for you and your loved ones and help you better manage your time in work or play. With prices starting at under $100 GPS tracking systems are within most budgets so do a little research and seek advice to determine the best options for you.

How to Configure a Windows 2003 Time Server

Computers have integral Real Time Clock chips (RTC) that provide time and date information. The real time clock chips are battery backed so that even during power outages, they can maintain time. The function of the Real Time Clock is to provide accurate time and date information to operating system processes and user applications. For many applications, this is adequate, however, quite often applications may need time to be synchronised with other PC's on the network.

For transaction processing in a networked environment or for scheduling purposes, the system time and date may need to be synchronised with every other PC on the local network. Microsoft Windows 2003 has an integrated time service that provides synchronisation between PC's in a domain.

This article describes how the Windows 2003 Time Service synchronises time and date information on servers to a domain controller. It also discuses how the Windows 2003 time synchronisation service uses NTP to synchronise servers in a domain.

Networked computers require an automated time synchronisation service which can automatically synchronise time on each client to an accurate master clock. The Microsoft Windows 2003 time synchronisation service was developed to fulfill this function. The service is installed by default on any Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 machine.

On power-up, the Windows 2003 time service starts automatically and attempts to synchronise time and date information with a domain controller using the NTP protocol. NTP is an Internet protocol developed for the transfer of accurate time. The Network Time Protocol provides accurate time information along with network transmission delay information, so that a precise time can be obtained.

A domain controller can be configured as either a trusted or an un-trusted time reference. A Windows Time Client will always attempt to synchronise time periodically with a trusted domain controller. In this manner networked Windows 2003 servers maintain synchronisation with a domain controller and each other.

The Windows 2003 time synchronisation service configuration settings are contained in a global group policy. The settings are obtained from registry entries, which are located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesW32Time. A breif description of the more useful time service configuration settings is contained below.

The 'AnnounceFlags' registry entry indicates whether the server is a trusted time reference. This flag should be set to the value 5 indicating that this PC is a trusted time source. The 'Type' registry entry specifies which network peers to accept synchronisation. Set the 'Type' registry entry to 'NTP' to specify synchronization to a NTP time server.

The 'SpecialPollInterval' registry entry defines how often the Windows 2003 operating system should poll the time server, the value should be specified in seconds. A recommended value is 900, which equates to a polling period of every 15 minutes. The 'NtpServer' parameter is used to provide domain names or IP addresses of NTP time servers that the operating system can synchronize to. Each domain name or IP address should be separated by a space.

Tracking systems are used for many reasons. A courier can determine where, and how fast, one of their vehicles is going at any time. Thieves can be followed right to their doorsteps. They can even remember mileage records and such, and remind you when go in for a service.

Most Vehicle tracking systems use GPS, or Global positioning system, to record their exact position, speed and direction at regular intermissions. A network of satellites in medium earth orbit gathers such data. This system is used for other applications, such as navigation, map making and land surveying. It was originally created by the US department of defence, who developed it to attain a precise time reference for earthquake study, and for synchronizing telecommunication systems.

Some advantages of fitting ones vehicle with a satellite tracking system would display as follows. One can get a 30 percent discount on vehicle insurance when fitted. Companies can catch out employees who are using company time to satisfy their personal needs during valuable company paid hours, or those dragging their feet for unwarranted extra overtime pay. Company managers of service and delivery organizations can respond to an order or call-out promptly by sending the nearest available vehicle to the area of the call, they can also gratify customers by providing a very accurate estimated time of arrival on deliveries and service. All employee or driver records like his or her exact routes can be charted and kept for the appropriate time – no employee can lie about their whereabouts. For the benefit of a company dispatcher, asset data can be freely monitored and managed over the very simple and user friendly system of a computer application.

Upon feedback from those who have bought vehicle tracking system installations, reports tell a 6 to 12 month return on investment, from the increased efficiency of production and reduced costs. Of course, one should never leave out of their memory the obvious drastic recoup of costs one would experience in the successful recovery of ones stolen asset or vehicle via the highly sophisticated system or network of satellites that circulate the outer atmosphere of the planet, coupled with the unit installed on the vehicle.

Navigation is made into child's play when one utilizes a satellite navigation device to aid them in finding accurate guidance to the sometimes near-impossible task of getting from their original position to the desired destination they require. A Nuvi, for example, which is a small (as small as a box of twenty cigarettes) gadget with an easy to use touch screen graphical user interface, will display a map of the immediate area, provided it has the data stored in its memory, and obligingly guide it's owner via voice suggestions concisely and directly to their targeted destination. It can store up to any number of maps and geographically useful items of information, within the capacity of its probably large digital memory, making it indispensable to any person who happens to need to negotiate difficult traffic situations or perhaps cut a living in the regular transportation of goods or what have you to destinations of irregular situation.

These to name a few, are some of the great benefits of investing in the brilliant service of a GPS tracking system.
